Re: 72 K20 Cab Body & Paint Complete!

Thanks litew8 and fakerwade. It is now starting to look like a truck. Can't wait to get the bed finished and bolted on and then finish bolting on the front half.

Decided to coat the bottom of the bed with a 2 part bedliner material that TP Tools sells. My buddy Bill, who did all the paint and body work, is going to spray both the bottom and top of the bed. The bottom is going to get a light coat and the top will get a heavier coat. Will probably also spray it on the bottom of the cab.

Can't decide whether to apply the bedliner material to the top of the bed rails or just up to the bottom of the top rails. I keep changing my mind. I plan on using the truck to haul stuff every now and then and I think it will help protect the tops of the rails a lot better.

Will search the site and see what others have done. Appreciate any opinions.

It's going to look awesome either way but if it were me I'd avoid coating the bedrails. These can be protected on the occasions you haul a load but lets you see more orange.....

BTW: Here's a truck on my local CL ( http://albuquerque.craigslist.org/cto/2775000969.html )that looks very similar to ours....tempting!

Your truck is coming a long great! That's a bad deal about that upper trim not wanting to fit!

Re: 72 K20 Cab Body & Paint Complete!

Made some progress on the K20 this weekend. I finished installing the front wiring harness and also installed both fender skirts. Check out the custom SPID sheet I typed up on Excel. Notice the bottom 2 "custom" options. Bet nobody else has those on their SPID sheet

P.S. I wouldn't spray the bedside tops with liner.

Re: 72 K20 Cab Body & Paint Complete!

While I was working on the front half of the truck, my buddy Stormin Norman (Bill) was busy spraying bedliner on the BOTTOM of the bed....that's right the bottom. He used the TP Tools 2 part epoxy bed liner kit. The bottom of the truck bed is sealed really well now. We both loved the way it turned out. He sprayed it all over the inside of both bedsides and all over the bottom. Definitely planning on doing the bottom of the cab now.

Re: 72 K20 Cab Body & Paint Complete!

Thanks to my bed flipping buddies below it is now ready to have the rest of it painted and the bedliner applied to the top. As you can see from all of the spots, there were a lot of dings in the bed. Bill was able to work a lot of them out with a hammer and dollie but some still had to be filled and sanded. The body work should be invisible once the bedliner is sprayed on. Should also be sealed real well against moisture from both the top and bottom.

Proud to say those are GM bedsides. The original bedsides were not rusted at all but thad way too many dents to try and fix. Had installed a Taiwan bedside on the drivers side but took it off when I bought the 2 NOS GM sides.

Still have both the LMC driver's side and original GM driver's side if anyone wants to drive to Churchville, MD. Thinking about selling them on craigslists, New Taiwan bedside for $350 (1 small ding) and the original GM with dents for $250. Too heavy to mess with trying to ship them. Does that sound about right for a good deal?

Looks great! Any plans to install an in-bed spare tire carrier before painting?

Re: 72 K20 Cab Body & Paint Complete!

Thank you DeadheadNM. Have never thought about a spare tire mount but it makes sense to install one before paint. Was that ever an option from Chevrolet for a fleetside? Will have to search for pictures of them. Could always spray it with bed liner material.

Maybe I could fabricate a spare tire mount that could connect/clamp to the front left and right pocket in the top of the bed rails? Then I could remove it if I needed to get a large load of something. Planning on using the truck as my daily weekend driver and will be using it to haul mulch, dirt, brush, building materials, etc.

Yes - that definitely was an option and would go real well in your build. I can post pics of the one in my bed if you want. Shouldn't be too hard to scare up an OEM piece on the parts board that would bolt in.

Would love to see the pics of the spare tire mount DeadheadNM.

Low Elco,
The guy that does the old radio conversions is John Cavanaugh. His e mail address is jc68gto4@verizon.net He lives in Marlton, NJ and will ship his upgraded radios anywhere. I sent him my stock radio and about a week or 2 later he shipped it back. He cleans them up and paints the chassis. They look really good when he is done.

Re: 72 K20 Cab Body & Paint Complete!

Your truck is coming along very nice! Your bed floor should look awesome! I'm going to have the top of mine Line-x'd and more than likely the bottom will get a thinner bed liner sprayed on it. Great work!

Re: 72 K20 Cab Body & Paint Complete!

Here's an OEM in-bed spare holder in original paint. GM mounted these on the driver side ahead of the wheel tub as shown. I believe it could be had as a dealer installed accessory as well. I got the bed from fellow board member Duncan & Son for my K20 build. Here's one that recently sold on the parts board: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=501206

Your truck looks great!!! I love the paint job. Thanks for the tip on the TPM sound deadening mat. I checked out the link you provided; Which item # did you end up getting? I figure if I get what you got I don't need to go measuring and hoping I got it right. http://www.tptools.com/p/2599,354_TP...ction-Mat.html

If you want an in-bed spare holder I'd shoot a PM to Paul (Duncan&Son) or Jason (sameyrasmea72) Duncan. I'll bet they can help you out. Pete

Re: 72 K20 Cab Body & Paint Complete!

Thanks Dieselwrencher. You will be glad you sprayed the bed liner on the bottom. If you have the bed off when you spray, consider masking the bottom of the areas where the box channel on the bed contact the frame and cross members. Or cover those areas with a thin coat.

DeadheadNM, Will send those guys a PM. Thank you.

DD1, Ended buying the 3 ply gray mat in 2 different size rolls as a result of what they had in stock. Originally ordered just one of the 3' x 10' rolls and it was only enough to do about half the cab floor. It cuts easy with sharp scissors and is simple to install (when room temperature or warmer). You can actually cut small sections and just overlap the edges. It bonds great to itself, will do the same job, and no one will ever see the seams when covered.

Went to order more and they were sold out of the 3 x10 so ordered a smaller 4' long roll they had in stock. Have since decided to also use the mat behind my door panels and behind the ceiling panel. Ordering a 3rd roll.

Re: 72 K20 Cab Body & Paint Complete!

Read some posts on this site earlier today about the kick panel vents and decided to see if there were any leaves stuck in the bottoms of mine. Glad I did, all kinds of stuff in the driver's side. The passenger side was not too bad.

Removed both vents and used a vacuum to get most of the stuff out. Then sanded and sprayed primer in there. Planning on painting the inside with POR 15 and replacing the seals in both vents. Any suggestions on where to get the best rubber seal material? Assume LMC probably has it but someone may have found other good sources.

Will also be installing some type of leaf guard under the cowl panel. Was thinking of using some type of stainless screen or grid. Saw some black plastic gutter guard on a post that actually looked pretty nice especially for the price. Would think that if it was designed to be used on a gutter that it should hold up ok exposed to the sun's UV rays.
