My crossover steering kit shipped from NWF today...
I also put in a lowball bid on eBay for an AC Delco fuel pump module and they accepted my offer. It looks like I'll be building a new aluminum tank for the motor swap... GM# 19167467 or FG0340 I need to start selling crap I have so I can but crap I need... lol Last edited by mcmlxix; 07-03-2012 at 04:14 AM. |

Re: New to me 1972 K5
So was in Autozone to pick up a heater core for the K5. I brought my new GM fuel pump to find out what compression fittings were avaiable... The counter guy says there is a Dorman repair kit I should look at HERE
Dorman # 800-058:: Its an 18" OE style nylon piece with a GM connector on one side and they include a brass barb for the other... I thought I would use this to connect to a 3/8 hard line... just get my own barbed end to mate to the hard line... The instructions say to put the end in HOT WATER to soften it before attempting to insert the brass end..... It would be on top of the tank and well protected.... Last Pic >>> Dorman # 800-058:: 3/8 compression to barb fitting. This should let me attache to the existing hard line.... forgot to mention the connector... Airtex WH3009 4 wires, flat blade, female $12 from AutoZone Last edited by mcmlxix; 03-18-2012 at 07:16 PM. |

Re: New to me 1972 K5
Rich, what's the status of the D60 brake upgrade? I haven't seen anything lately? It looks like you are gathering parts for the blazer otherwise. as far as mirrors go, have you tried finding the factory SS mirror brackets for the blazer? IMO, they look the best on these trucks.

Re: New to me 1972 K5
Well I just got the NWFab parts and I will be continuing the D60 upgrade shortly... I got the welded parts back not too long ago... and ground the spindle for caliper clearance.... I need to finish assembling the oither caliper (pistons and seals) and have the brackets powder coated.... I'm just worried about the sharp edge from the water jet. I want to round the edges of the new brackets first...
I also broke down and got the F@%!) mirrors.. I got one installed.. but I still need to install the driver side. |

Re: New to me 1972 K5
Rich what type of Ford mirrors did you put on the Blazer? I'm not sure, but my brother in law might still have the correct SS truck mirrors for a 72 blazer/pickup. I'll have to keep my eyes open for the brake upgrade thread.

I do however want to move the fuel filler lower and behind a door. I need to fill the holes from a pair of Hickey tanks and CB antenna anyway. I'll update some pics soon.... |

Re: New to me 1972 K5
Here is the rear axle. Its a 14 BFF from a late model truck with disc brakes. I cut the old perches off. I ground the welds down smooth and test fit my DIY4x perches ... but didit get that pic...
I also cleaned up my custom D60 front caliper brackets. (see my other thread for the details) and test fit my NorthWest Fab crossover cap. It eliminated a 4" block that raised the steering arm. I'll need to run a chase tap through one of the bolt holes as one is slightly cross threaded. I hope I don have to helicoil it.... I also replaced the heater core last week. It was a pinhole leak. I cleaned everything up and used new hose. The interior of the original hose was deteriorating. Last edited by mcmlxix; 03-05-2012 at 04:30 AM. |

Re: New to me 1972 K5
Ok...
Found out one of the bolt holes on the DS knuckle was helicoiled already and it needs to be redone.... that sucks. Got some brackets back from the powder coaters. Satin Black. I'll take some pics tomorrow. It included my custom caliper brackets and I'll try to assemble the brakes and steering this weekend.... EDIT: no time this weekend to finish anything, but did put one arm on and threw the bracket on for a quick pic... Last edited by mcmlxix; 03-19-2012 at 04:26 PM. Reason: added pic |

Re: New to me 1972 K5
Looks like you found a nice rig for restoration. In my humble opinion, I like to see the rally wheels painted the body color, with chrome trim rings...keeping center caps chrome if the top is white. If the vehicle has a black top, I might consider making the center caps black. I think the latter would look great on your color ( is that Ochre? code 151110? ) Blazer or dark olive, or the copper color ( don't know the factory name of the copper color ) with a black soft top and black lower molding and black Chevrolet tailgate molding.

Here are the shocks. Earlier today I dropped off some templates to the waterjet guy to cut some front shock towers and lower mounts.... forgot to get pics of the templates but I'll post pics of them when they're done...

Re: New to me 1972 K5
I havent updated much. I ordered the trans parts, cooler lines and fittings.
I was trying to figure out a York compressor mount for on board air, but I think that will be put on hold till the swap is complete. I had to put off the front shock mounts till I get the D60 under the front of the truck. I called a local radiator shop and the quoted me $85 to coat the inside of a steel gas tank. I figured I will just have my frined weld up a new, larger fuel tank that will accept the late model intank pump. I also may change from the OEM style connector to -6AN uniformity, as the rest of the fuel line connections wil be -AN. I found a 3/8" compression to -6AN male fitting. I will probably also have all the hydroboost fitting changed to -6AN from Sweet Performance. I picked up a reman 2WD steering box from a guy parting out a truck. I hope to have -AN fittings on the seering box as well. |

Re: New to me 1972 K5
I did buy a bunch of Made in the USA -6AN to 3/8" compression fittings off eBay. They look great. They fit the factory fuel line on the intake manifold, they fit the 3/8" fuel line I picked up from the local parts store AND they fit the factory 4L80e transmission cooler lines....
I also (almost) decided to go with a Vaporworx stanless billet machined fuel pump ring to mount my new OEM pump. If I go stainless I can save the $85 for coating the inside of the tank and the $$ I was going to spend to have the outside covered in Line-X I also went out in the garage and arranged the drivetrain. The custom 4L80e to NP205 adapter isn't shown and the front D60 is disassembled and will be cleaned.... |

Also test fit the 2010 Camaro manifold... Camaro on the left, Sierra on the right... |

Re: New to me 1972 K5
Not much of an update. Been looking at brake lines from the MC to the Wilwood proportioning valve. Test fit the -6 AN fitting on the Hydroboost and the power steering box. Dropped off some aluminum and AN fittings with a friend to have him make me a custom power steering reservior.
I had the Dana 60 broke down and hot tanked to get the 5 pounds of mud and dirt out of the tubes. New seals and pinion nut on the yoke. I'll throw a coat of paint on it and start assembly. I plan to upgrade and add another set of seals to keep dirt, water and mud out of the tubes... I can't believe they dont have a seal from the factory... This is what I found... Seals-It EAS2-05 Silcone the seal in place and fill the center with grease. Keeps water and dirt out of the tube.... |
