Re: Dana 20 or Dana 205?

Really looking at ORD's rebuilt NP205 transfer cases. Need some info on the front output shafts. Seems the standard NP205 front output shaft is a GM 10 spline, but they also had a GM 30 spline shaft. ORD offers a new 32 spline output shaft for strength. They say another big advantage is you can get just about any yoke you want since it takes the same yokes as a NP205 rear output. Drivetrain plan is: 350 small block, Muncie 465 4 speed manual, NP205 t-case, 1 Ton Dana 60 frt., axle, 14 bolt GM rear axle. Any thoughts on this setup? Sounds like the way to go with the transfer case, that way I can get the proper yokes to hook up my 1 ton driveshafts. If I order a NP205 case with the 32 spline front output shaft will I have any trouble mounting it up to my planned drivetrain? Any help here would be great!

Re: Dana 20 or Dana 205?

the early 205's had the 10spl, nothing major to speak of. the late 70's brought the advent of the 30spl and that is what chevy ran till 91.

you can swap in the 32spl front but you wont need to. it take ALOT to bust a 10spl, you are in as select few if you can. i run one simply because i have a doubler and a bbc.

ditching th e10spl can help depending on what style of cv shaft you want to use in the front. if you want to keep the yoke mounted cv then the 10spl is fine. if you want to use the stock or high end flange type you will NEED the 30 or 32spl, no flange for the 10spl shaft.

with the 32spl you can run a 1310, 1330, 1350, flange, or if you really want to step and get ballsy a 1410.

Re: Dana 20 or Dana 205?

Your Dana 60 front axle will have a 1330 yoke just like your old Dana 44 or a 10 bolt front.

Re: Dana 20 or Dana 205?

Found a side frame mount for a NP205 case on e-bay. Say's it mounts the t-case to the frame on the passenger side. I assume I'll need one of these to swap in the 205 in place of the 20 right?

Re: Dana 20 or Dana 205?

You can find 4spd/NP205 combos used for a couple hundred bucks. These rarely need service other than leaks, which can be fixed while out of vehicle easily.

I swapped a 205 into a Blazer that had a 20.I don`t recall doing anything with the crossmember.I used a donor vehicle with complete set-up.Maybe I swapped crossmembers. It was over 25 years ago.

Re: Dana 20 or Dana 205?

2Tons, advantages- disadvantages to running the frame mount? Seems like you would want it there, but I don't know about maybe the flex factor? Got the crossmember for the np 205 today, and a new shift lever also, so am dedicated to this t-case swap so far! Any help here would be great!

Re: Dana 20 or Dana 205?

some people have had problems with the adapters breaking, they will atribute it to either A, not have the the little bracket and claim that the weight of the case + wheeling is what caused it or B, the bracket put extra stress on the case from frame twisting and power/drivetrain flex.

i have never run it and i have never had a problem, iand i am HARD on my rig.

Re: Dana 20 or Dana 205?

2Tons, thank's for the advice. Currently bidding on a side mount on e-bay. I think I'm gonna go with the mount, just because it was factory setup. Might not be right, but I'll find out! Thank's. Anybody else ready to chime in here?

Re: Dana 20 or Dana 205?

Getting stuff setup for a NP205 swap. Buying all components to mount the case up. Pretty much got everything but the actual t-case. Still need the adapter and new gasket, and oh the Np205! Not a WTB, but I need some help here!

Re: Dana 20 or Dana 205?

Like I said, I'm jumping in with both feet! Wife is worried, going a little crazy with the spending for the K5 lately, but I can't help myself! Gonna swap out this dana 20 soon, just have to find a np205 to replace it.

Re: Dana 20 or Dana 205?

Found a NP205 case, just waiting for it to arrive! Looking at buying the skid plate and the second crossmember to complete the swap. Looks like I'm going to end up with 2 passenger side frame mounts for the 205, oh well!

Re: Dana 20 or Dana 205?

Found a polyurethane transfer case torque mount grommet set at LMC. The side mount I got off e-bay, the rubber's are trashed. Anybody running the LMC poly's? If I get positive feedback, just might have found my birthday present!

Re: Dana 20 or Dana 205?

Also found a polyurethane transmission mount from LMC. Looks more like it's a t-case adapter mount, right? Why do they call it a transmission mount? Maybe because it mounts the transmission and the transfer case as a unit. Or am I missing something here? Anybody?

Re: Dana 20 or Dana 205?

NP205 is on it's way here today. Got it with the adapter and torsion/side mount. Also got a skid plate and second crossmember coming. Already picked up the proper 205 crossmember and shifter. Oh and got a couple of used adapter mounts and a speedometer adapter. All I need to find now is a NOS shifter boot and retaining ring, or am I forgetting something?

Re: Dana 20 or Dana 205?

Think I got all the bases covered now. NP 205 case, crossmember, torsion mount, skid plate w/crossmember, shift boot w/ retaining ring, case shifter rod, shifter knob, transmission adapter. Just need to order up all the new poly mounts. Have a question on the high hump shifter floor housing, are they the same for the dana 20 and the np205, or different?

Re: Dana 20 or Dana 205?

same.

its not tha hump that would hit any how, its the floor behinde the hump flange.

if you look at a 4wd hump vers a 2wd hump the are different.
