Re: project: WTF did I get myself into 50 chevy

I still need to do that, I never mocked up the radiator support so im not sure how much to cut off yet. If you look close at the picture you can see they didnt get painted.

Re: project: WTF did I get myself into 50 chevy

I did notice that they were not painted and I was told to cut them 1/2" past the steering box.

because of the steering box, you're limited on how far back you can cut it.
the way ive seen almost everyone else do it is exactly what Fat Mike just said.. about a 1/2" from the steering box bolt.. you cant go any closer without effecting how the steering box is mounted. (plus any closer, and the box itself would be in the way)
you will still have to trim the inner fenders to fit.. so dont worry about cutting it "too far back".. you just trim all you can, then mod the fenders for the rest.

Ive seen that in other peoples builds but that is another problem...no steering box yet.

You don't need a steering box, just go off the forward most bolt hole. I cut mine right up to the sleeve in the frame for that bolt, then cut the other side to match.

Re: project: WTF did I get myself into 50 chevy

This is killing about about what frame to use on my build, it is a 52 long wheel base truck, original frame is still under it and i am thinking i will reuse it but this s10 conversion is so inviting to me lol...this is my first build involving frame/suspension work and i need some help understanding, would i need to move the rear axle to center the wheels in the wheel well opening? i was told the A-Arms need to be changed as well to give it a wider stance in the front, please someone help me with these questions so i can sleep better lol...thanks!

Here is a picture of what i am building.

hotrodjoe - I think you will get more answers if you post your question as a new thread instead of in the middle of someone else's.

Welded up 50 somthing holes then a lot of body work. I re-did the passenger side and got rid of the heater hole while my cab was off. Next time I will cut out the whole thing and weld in a new firewall though. Way too much work the way I did it.

Sweet looking truck! I really like the color. I would like to shave the seam on my hood but have yet to find a good way to do it. How did you do yours?

Could you elaborate more on the width problems of your Camaro clip? What year Camaro was the clip from, problems you had, etc.?

Re: project: WTF did I get myself into 50 chevy

It was a 73ish clip, front steer. It might have been fine with the 6" wheels and skinny tires in front but these 18x8s were a no go. I had no steering without the tires rubbing the fenders. When I bought it the truck had stock camaro wheels in front with a 195/65 and it only rubbed when going into driveways while turning. Getting into my driveway tore up the passenger fender pretty bad.

I need to post up more pictures, ive been taking my sweet time mocking up the motor and tranny. Ive never done this before so im being extra careful. Measure 25 times weld once!

Yep 2nd Gen Camaro is too wide, if you had a 1st Gen Camaro or a 68-74 Nova clip you would have been fine. I thought I would just share that info for those that may be thinking of going that route. Sorry If I'm out of place.

Re: project: What did I get myself into 50 chevy

Frame and engine are together again. Still have not decided on what headers, brakes or control arms im using yet but here it is. Putting the cab and front clip on next.

Engine mounts

Mounted the cab last night but I didnt realize how much these mounts moved the engine up. I might have to tunnel the floor for the driveshaft.

The lower your motor the better it handles.
