Re: Sacto67 Build diary

The truck sat for 11 years before I bought it a few months back. It has new fuel lines, new fuel pump, a new HEI distributor, new plug wires/plugs, and the carb was rebuilt. It will idle but will not accept throttle backfiring through the carb and then quitting. I would love to keep this truck but without knowing why it will not run to fix it and with no funds to replace the engine with a V8 . It is a base model truck, 3 speed manual on the column, 4 wheel disc brakes, and no power steering.

It has the normal rust spots for the truck but it is complete. I bought an entire front sub-frame from a 84 Suburban which came with Bell Tech drop spindles, lowering springs, and shocks. The sub-frame has the power steering box, sway bar, and I have a power steering pump for it. I have the front brake lines and proportioning valve from the burb too. I have a power brake booster, pedal assembly for converting it to an automatic, and an automatic cross member. I bought a seat from a 2004 Chevy truck which has the shoulder seatbelts. It is two buckets with the jump seat in the middle. These are all thing that come with the truck but are not installed. The original seat was reupholstered before it was parked 11 years ago and is in great shape besides needing a good cleaning.

I stripped the interior when I first got the truck so the cab floors are bare. I also stripped the rotted wood from the bed and it all needs replaced. Anyways this is a great short bed project truck with a lot of potential.

Nope wife decided she wanted to let it sit around not running for a few more months. This WAS supposed to be my daily drive but now we are just gonna let it sit and be down a car.

Sounds like good news to me! I say hop on CraigsList and find a decent lower mileage small block and drive the wheels off of it.

Re: Sacto67 Build diary

So I have the hook up on a 12K mile 350 sb and 350 trans, exhaust, column, etc. but I have to wait for my taxes. In the mean time after talking with a few people I think the issue with the 292 is a vacuum leak. It makes sense since the timing is good before thottle is added and then backfires.

I replaced the vacuum lines already and the issue is still there. What are possible other areas for vacuum leaks?

Smile Re: Sacto67 Build diary

A vacuum leak will be more noticeable at idle, causing the engine to run rough. After reading all that you have done to the truck, I am leaning towards a valve problem or camshaft problem. The camshaft may be nearly flat on one lobe for an exhaust valve, which will let it idle OK, but then backfire on acceleration by not letting the exhaust gasses exit the cylinder quickly enough before the intake valve opens. I would suggest that you suck it up and take it to a mechanic and pay him to diagnose it once and for all and quit spending money on replacing parts that may not be needed.

Re: Sacto67 Build diary

If you take the six cylinder out of the truck, please keep all the Smog pump stuff with it as it is hard to come by. I am sure that someone would want it.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm currently waiting for my tax return, then the motor will be removed and sold. Heck, I guess I could just post it for sale now........

Re: Sacto67 Build diary

Seeing how the tires on the truck are almost shot and the bolt pattern is soon to change I got some new shoes for the truck as well.

Yup, I'm glad I kept it. :-)

Finally had some time to put so work in on the project today. About 47% prepped for the cross member.

Finished up the driver's side rail and installed the subframe. It's sitting on all 4 tires for the first time in months.

Haha, that's how I roll. Unfortunately my other jack stands have been under another project for about 4 years.
