Re: Truck runs ad then shuts off

Cracked me up.Where the truck is sitting, I can not charge it up to get it running. The Generator was checked and fixed before I put it in..I'm honestly thinking its the Voltage regulator because its the Original V-R and I've read some things on the Signs of them going bad.I don't understand how things can go so well and then ****ty because when I polarized the V-R it didn't do anything. What is the best type of Voltage regulator I need to get ?

Standard VR-22 seems to be the one for 50 and early 60 35 watt 12v systems. They are priced from $12-16 on the internet. Rockauto was the cheapest. but i did not check shipping. NAPA carries Standard parts if you have one close.

Re: Truck runs ad then shuts off

Standard is a respected brand been making parts for at least the last 50 years. If you go to NAPA and get anything electrical is it usually Standard or Dorman. If you order aftermarket ignition or light switch, lamp sockets most likely they will come in Standard packaging, that is why I encourage people to look at NAPA first. They are inexpensive because the design is 60 years old, it is low wattage to match the generator and relatively simple. I do not know if they still make them in the US of if they are off shore. Rockauto was at $12 but probably has about $6 S&H, NAPA was at $16. Other brands are more expensive, but I guess it is based on cost to produce lower quantities (Standard probably made a qazillion when it cost $2 to make one) or selling where there is limited availablility.

Your rig being a 59 will have a 12v system.

Yep, 12v system with a generator. If you think you are having issues maintaing a charge, and your battery is fresh, check the battery cables and connections. If the wire is old and breaking at the connectors cut out the broken part.
If you replace them entirely, welding cable makes really nice battery cable.

Re: Truck runs ad then shuts off

I think generators where standard until around 1963 on cars and trucks. My 60 Impala had a generator but my 64 Chevelle came standard with an alternator that still used a voltage regulator.
