Re: maxxy's 81 bagged c10 build

Ok I decided that to be safe, I would borrow a bigger welder from my dads shop. It is a Lincoln AC-225 Arc Welder. This should be suitable for the job right?

Re: maxxy's 81 bagged c10 build

and get rid of that 60xx rod its not a structural its to brittle for something that vibrates
if your using stick run 7018 and it a good idea to keep it dry and warm

Re: maxxy's 81 bagged c10 build

that lincoln will be plenty. a 7018 rod is great, however if used with the right amperage the 6011 will do a good job too. you want the welder to be set as high as it can go without burning through the metal for max. penetration. what kind of pattern are you running with your welds? P.S. I wasnt trying to flame your welding skills or anything, i just want it to be as safe as possible for you.

Re: maxxy's 81 bagged c10 build

So far I have been using a "C" pattern on my welds.

I would sure rather use 6011, because I already have a lot of it, but if it's going to be compromising the structural integrity of my frame, then I'd like to go with something different. I just want to be safe. But do you think 6011 is going to be enough?

Re: maxxy's 81 bagged c10 build

Like gray said above, 6011 will work
And also as stated above you need to keep moisture out of your rods.
They make rod ovens to get the moisture out, I don't see why you couldn't use a regular kitchen oven on a low setting to heat them up before you use them.
Your welds, from the pics, look cold (not penetrating well).
What do you have your welder set at?
I think you need to turn it up.

Here is some info I found with a quick google search
http://www.thefabricator.com/article...-6011-and-7018
It says the 7018 is easier to run and needs to be kept moisture free.

Re: maxxy's 81 bagged c10 build

I usually use 6011 as a universal rod, it works good for most anything. Honestly the 7018 is harder to work with. a C pattern is your best bet, or a circle pattern. bump up your amperage and get some scrap steel to practice on, and run bead after bead after bead until you perfect your skills. This is how i started off and how I have taught a few people also. good luck

Re: maxxy's 81 bagged c10 build

It's been a while since I've updated but I've been busy with high school basketball in full swing. I got a little work done today, I tacked together my front mount crossmember for my wishbone 4 link.

Re: maxxy's 81 bagged c10 build

Lol well I love the sport, but even if I didn't, the school would probably force me to play, mainly because I'm 6'8". Haha. My 4 link mount/ support/ rear crossmember/ thingy ( I've yet to find an official name) is designed to hold the lower links inside the frame rails, and the whole thing is supposed to bolt right in. And I thought the angles made it a little less boring.

Re: maxxy's 81 bagged c10 build

It's not my daily driver by any means (ive been working on this for over a year) lol. So when it comes time where I can drive it around, I'm gonna need to come up with some way to get that extra leg room. My DD is a 2000 escalade, mostly blacked out

Re: maxxy's 81 bagged c10 build

Got a little done today. I got my lower bars tacked up today.

Heres a close up on the adjustable rod ends.

Here's the upper bars I just have to get the angle set for the wishbone.

Re: maxxy's 81 bagged c10 build

If you use a 6011 rod, use the 'whip' method. Move forward 1/8" and back 1/16"(doesnt have to be "EXACT" just close. The 6011 is a penetrating rod....7018 is like butter! Good luck!

Re: maxxy's 81 bagged c10 build

I hate to jump in with a question about welding when its a build thread but what about a 6013 rod? I seem to weld better with that than the 6011. Maybe I just need to practice more. What you think?

MILLER TIME: thanks for the compliment
