Filling the seams along bedsides and hood. I did this to mine -I think it looks alot smoother/ cleaner. Also filled in the turn signal holes and stake pockets.

Here's a weird one I found on the Sacramento Craigslist. The pic is not good, but it looks like somebody carried the body line all the way around the back of the bed and grafted the front of a 60-61 hood to the roll pan area.

Here is the link to the ad:http://sacramento.craigslist.org/cto/2400100249.html

Re: (( 1960-1966 Chevy/GMC Pickup Truck Restoration/Modification/Customization Ideas

What has been done for steering wheels? I see a lot of the same old thing, Impala wheel, deluxe wheel, billet/custom wheel, OE late model truck wheel, but has anyone done anything different?

I know a few people have done different dashes, but it seems like everyone does the same basic wheels. Maybe I just have too many ideas that are so crazy, nobody else thinks they are worth the time/effort, or maybe I'm just crazy.

I have an idea for mine, but it seems I have a taste for the hard to come by (even though this damn wheel is in 90% of the photos I've seen). I have a few options in the works and hope to have my wheel here, mocked up, and ready to roll by the end of next month. If I can't find the exact wheel I want, my second/third options are still pretty cool.

Re: (( 1960-1966 Chevy/GMC Pickup Truck Restoration/Modification/Customization Ideas

My favorite wheel has always been the early Covico.

They are distinctive in having a shallow dish and equally spaced spokes. They were very inexpensive when new, and as a result very few decent examples remain. I’ve also always favored the 58-59 Impala wheel since they day they came out.

But if I were to do something different, I’d go for a 62 Impala wheel, or a 59 Oldsmobile wheel. They still look very cool and period correct, but are not often seen anymore.

Here are a couple of examples from Google Images:

Guess I just need to get off my ass and do mine so everyone can tell me what a stupid idea it was.

<edit>I know one thing, mine will be different.

That rear bumper looks like it solves the plate rubbing on the tailgate issue.

I've decided to go with the 67 bumper on my 66 fleetside. I really like the look and I think it makes the rear look lower with the hanging plate. I also picked up this 65 Belair wheel that I'm going to try restoring.

Re: (( 1960-1966 Chevy/GMC Pickup Truck Restoration/Modification/Customization Ideas

Wow! These trucks are so far out of my league that I don't know where to start. I have a '66 Chevy C10 SWB pickup that I just want to replace the engine in. It currently has the 250 six cylinder and I want to put a V8 in it. I am not a mechanic and I don't even know where to start ( such as what motor will fit without rebuilding the whole truck ). This truck will be just for everyday driving, not a showpiece. I guess I just want suggestions or comments from someone who has been there before and knows what all I am going to encounter. I have owned the truck for 38 years and it is in very good condition, just needs a new motor. Any help that you may provide will be greatly appreciated.

Re: (( 1960-1966 Chevy/GMC Pickup Truck Restoration/Modification/Customization Ideas

For V8 options, 66 came stock with a 283 or 327, so any small block chevy will easily fit (and all accessories, etc are easily available) - so, 283, 327, 307, 305, 350. Easiest is a 350 since they practically grow on trees, but a 283/327 of somewhere mid-60's vintage is a cool addition. If you're not up for a rebuild yourself of the junkyard small block, a crate engine is probably right up your alley. In addition to the above stock cubes, crate motors are generally found in a 350 or 355 (bored 350) or 383 (bored/stroked 350). If you go crate, 383 is a vrery good option. Recommend a head to toe (carb to pan) running engine since you you won't have the add-ons (water pump, distrib, manifold, carb, etc etc) to swap from you 6 cyl. You may still need to do a little shopping (or a large swap meet usually has refurbished ones) for some a/c, alternator, and power steering pump brackets (if you're running any of the upgrades like ps/a/c, etc). You will need V8 motor mounts, and they should bolt right into your frame and onto about any small block. Personally, I'd swap the tranny out too - if you're looking for a driving machine - the powerslide auto or stock 3/4-speeds leave a little to be desired in my opinion. Remember, you've always got the forum to ask the stumpers you run into - guaranteed someone on here has an answer. No guarantee it's the RIGHT answer, but, you get the idea... Only way to learn is to dive in. Sounds like a blast, good luck!

Re: (( 1960-1966 Chevy/GMC Pickup Truck Restoration/Modification/Customization Ideas

Hey thanks for the information. That is exactly what I was looking for. One other question (for now anyway). If I choose to go with the 350 engine which seems to make the most sense, do I need to get a wiring harness for that engine since it will probably be totally different from the exixting 6 cylinder.

Here are a couple more pictures of the same truck, before the grille/headlight changes, and addition of the hood ornament. Reminds me of some of the earliest model kits I built as a kid.

Saw this on a 64 at Billetproof California today. It's subtle and it's more practical than attractive, though I think it looks good.

Check out the screening below the cowl.

Maybe painted an accent color, or matching the body paint would be better. It doesn't look bad, but could possibly be better. Any pictures of the whole truck?
