I figured. thats why i gave the full scale run down for you... haha

i did find a place in MO that does fantastic polishing. chrome like finish. but that is to shiny. i did give a token amount of thought to sending it to an electro-polishing outfit too, but i like the raw finish better.

Re: 72 k20 project

so, i did a little fiddling around and found that the original hood to the truck was not worth any more time. the front edge was rusted out, in an unfortunate turn of events. i had it sitting on a pallet in my Grandma's shed for years. at some point it was bumped off the pallet and sat on the dirt floor. in humid IA.

No biggy, the hood from the yellow truck is in good shape and absolutely rust free. BUT, it has fortyseven coats of stuff on it. i used stripper and a scraper to get most of the top layers. there was a very resilient layer of primer at the bottom. it is sanded almost through as well. but i figured it added a helpful layer of filler. i also started to flatten the front edge a little. it had few dings and i figured i would smooth it out. still needs some tuning, but that gives me something to do after school. my air compressor deserved a break anyhow. i had been beating on it all afternoon

this innocuous yellow paint is deceptive. under it is another shade of yellow, a nice brown, a gray primer, what must have been a white repaint early on to match the OEM, and the super primer. dang.

Re: 72 k20 project

Thanks!

i had read somewhere that sandblasting the hood is a no no. i guess it is too flat. i didn't even talk to the blaster, figured it was good for me to put on the ear muffs and ear phones, slap on the respirator and sweat to the oldies for a few hours. not sure if it was my favorite thing, but i can drop this off at the painter this week, and hopefully temp him with cash so he shoots the rest of the front clip and doors too. long weekend coming up, and i am thinking about pulling the bed apart. that will give me access to the rear frame and make some of the plumbing and whatnot easier as well as making me less nervous when the cab sits back down. it will also force me to get serious about ordering the bed parts. not that i am real excited about that. i have an order on Summit for way to much money and it doesnt even begin to cover all the fittings and hoses i need for plumbing. this thing is a money grubbing whore. haha

since no one wants to hear me whine, ill post some pics.

tacked this up a little.

Amen brother! Can you imagine what this truck would cost you if you weren't able to fabricate. It's either a disease as to why we spent every moment in the garage or just a passion. I want to believe its an undying love for metal, wheels, and noise but sometimes I wonder.

$900 is a little low for a custom aluminum oil pan....

Re: 72 k20 project

So at a rate of $6/hour, what is the whole truck worth?

Never mind. It'd probably be depressing to think about it. Mine would be worth a mint, and I don't have near as much time (or talent) into mine. Run of the mill C20's with amateur body work just don't bring in that kind of dinero. So I'll probably just keep it for another 28 years.

Keep it up. This thread is awesome.

at that rate, just considering labor, probably like half a million. haha. maybe not quite. sometimes it seems like 1000s and 1000s of hours. probably not as much as it seems since i do a lot of contemplating and not a lot of work some days in the garage.

i wouldnt feel bad charging that, depending on the requirements of the pan. to do a complete custom takes time. even mine isn't that intricate and the layout was painful to the head. just to break up the material i have now required 12 or so different lines of program in the break, and each one is a set up procedure. i think it took me over an hour just to break that up. after the mind bending computer sesh. oh well, its worth it to have what has to be one of few sheet metal pans on a cummins.

Re: 72 k20 project

some 4th of july fiddling around!

you see the notch, looks silly, but its there for a reason.

this is the tie rod. it clears at ride height, but needs to have some room at dump. its almost even with the second main cap centerline. so i made the notch as big as i could. fingers crossed. haha. i'll add a drain to the front area so i dont have to worry about the old oil tainting my fresh oil changes.

some other pictures

Re: 72 k20 project

Have you considered custom making the tie-rod with a bend to clear the pan?

Thanks! i have been eyeballing fabbed aluminum pans for years. never really built anything that remotely deserved one(but i think the jeep is due in for some hotrod stuff, so maybe ill use one on it!) so i was excited that i had a reasonable excuse to build this. way to racy for this truck, but why not!?

the tie rod was ordered from ORD custom already. meaning that the "normal" one already has a bend. in my little bubble of pseudo-reality, bends dont belong in steering. this is a rule i am willing to bend in the right circumstance. this just didnt qualify. due to the location constraints, bending the tie rod would put it in the panhard pretty hard. any mods to the panhard(this is another no bend piece in my opinion) would put it in the diff cover pretty fierce. this stuff is all very space sensitive. so, a bend would not solve much for me. and trust me, it was on the plate for a brief moment.

Very nice.I like alot.

You could charge alot of Pesos for one of them.

(Or a Cummins swap kit...Just sayin.)

How's your bodywork/paint going ?

Thanks! i'd like to sell a few of them to generate some fun money, but dang, they are some work. in the next few weeks, i hope to start producing billet tappet covers too. that should sell pretty good. if i can sell just the pan flanges, id be extra happy.

paint and body? who knows. i've been busy enough lately that i havent stopped to see. i have noticed a lot of work has happened on his dirt track car in the recent weeks, so i hope he is short on cash and long on time now that it is running. that should motiviate him to call me and say he needs money. downside is, i have to pay him.... haha

i took some time to get this ready for him. needed a bunch of paint stripped and then i did some filler work and painted the underside.

i dont even know what i'm doing after this truck. i keep thinking about an overhaul on the Jeep. it would run hard with a nice little rec port headed twin turbo 454 in it... haha. or a rowdy set of twins for the 12 valve i build next. since i found this that i kind of want to buy.

that is a clean truck! but there are several design issues i would dock him points on. and if its worth 40k with a 383 and all those stock parts, i can only think that mine would be worth 75k what with all the custom stuff. i kind of want to email him a link to this thread and burst his bubble. you arent the only one! and my front geometry isnt nearly as sketch. and whats with the fuel cell in the back?
