Re: 72 k20 project

a little piddling around today. I did some other things, but i didnt get any pics, and its no fun without pics. hopefully more to come tomorrow.

this is the OEM cummins rocker box hold down. pretty fancy. it is a sealing bolt, has an oring at the top and a cute little recess for the oring to sandwich into as it meets the similarly shaped countersink in the rocker box. at just the right time for the shoulder to bottom out on the pedestal below and preload the rocker box gaskets just so.

so, as a few of you may know from reading or talking to me, i have a slight case of the twitch. in my last McMaster Carr binge, i bought some regular M10x20mm shoulder bolts. You can see what i meant about twitching out. allen heads everywhere. cant hardly stand the hex head on the very top. plus two of the stock bolts had a stud top for the fancy dodge logo cover piece. ugly.

thankfully these are like most. the diameter of the shoulder necks down at the head. not totally legit, but it allows the o-ring to go somewhere as it is turned in.

now, it cant be all that easy. i had a gross of small sized "fender" washers. for an upcoming part of the puzzle. i drilled the ID out so it just barely sneaks over the M8-1.25 threads on the shoulder bolt. 5/16" is just a hair under 8mm so it works perfect. that adjusted the effective length of the shoulder enough to not wildly over tighten it.

Re: 72 k20 project

I agree! that top cover is ugly, even on the dodges.

i will have the twitch again, until i make another Mcmaster order so i can get some 1.5mm thick, ground flat M8 spacer washers. make the swap totally legit. naturally the Cummins part had to be some goofball length.

Re: 72 k20 project

Recieved a gold plated box today with that big "C" stenciled on the side.

nice to know the B shift lackey is the guy inspecting my order...

one item in the box is the Cummins support bracket for the QE296 compressor. this couples with another yet to be shipped bracket, that may or may not work for me. at least i have something to start with if i need to do some more fabricating.

another item was this OEM thermostat. consensus of the several good sources of information i have, and the internet of course, it was determined that OEM is pretty much the only way to go here. i was planning on that anyhow, but checked to make sure the 30$ gap in price was actually worth it.

included in my seal kit was this new T-stat housing o-ring. retard proof directions.

and that shiny hunk of aluminum(gold) is the cummins oil plate for remote filters.

you will see in the previous pic and these after, that the twitch cannot be stopped.

Fan hub, ALT mount, and brand new water pump installed.

this is the fabricated water inlet. this one got cap screws instead of buttons. looks better and better clearance.

and another special gold plated box showed up today as well, filled with the IP!

It was sent to Utah and given the once over. flowed and matched for 550-600 HP. 4k spring. DVs and aneroid kit. and whatever else vodoo these sneaky pump guys do.

then i have been head scratching about this again. its big and the spot is tight back here. considering a front mount and possible bumper to accomodate. then i would still try to mount a smaller winch. this one is a 12k. i would bet an 8K would fit better and suit my needs for trailer loading assistance in the rear, but then i have to buy another freaking winch. we'll see how this one goes.

What would you guys do? obviously the second winch will ding the truck budget, postponing the finish date and all that...

Re: 72 k20 project

Speaking of gold plated parts from Cummins my Dad just bought a water pump for an 855 and it COST LESS than thought humanly possible! It was only 20 dollars more than Chinese made NAPA one!!!! Unbelievable and impossible for that to ever happen again in history. Haha. Hey at least no one has figured out how to put a Cat in these yet or else Cummins price could only be called bronze at that point. Everything looking really good! I like the idea of a front and back winch . 12k should be plenty big lol

Nice splurge on hardware. It looks nice. The winch does look a bit big, but I bet you find a way to sneak it in there.

Mcmaster makes it easy. its only ten buck for a bag of 25! i think i have in 5mm increments, every length from 20mm-70mm and a bag of 18mm in M8-1.25. and several M10 and M12s as well. haha.

winch problem is solved. i am going to draw the parts tonight, hopefully get them cut next week when i get back from the north country. i pity the fool who rear ends this truck. it will be very sturdy. more so after this winch mount

I think you need to work on a front bumper after this winch fiasco.

I agree. i wasnt always so twitchy, but anymore i am willing to drop the cash on a some bolts. for the benifit of new hardware and the cleanliness it provides i think it is more than worth it for this truck

Yep. IDK WTF you've been waiting for. That yellow monster needs one too before it meets a mule deer or something.

Re: 72 k20 project

so...

i get a call that the pan is done. HECK YES.

somehow the message that it was to get PC'ed raw was lost. so it got sandblasted. dammit. the work is top notch. always is with the local shop. knowing Jim, he will happily color it any color i wish and get it done asap. but i am leaning towards running it in the raw blasted look. still goes with the raw AL accessories on the engine. if i did re-coat, it would be in satin black. also, all the oil fittings will be red and blue for the blasted look, black if coated in satin. Opinions welcome on that one.

Re: 72 k20 project

Having had even non leaky gas engines with aluminum heads and seeing how easy they get ugly I would put SOMETHING, anything on it. I hate that you would cover that pretty pan up but I think otherwise it will look grungy and dirty soon.

It is powder coated clear. they just blasted it before instead of clearing the raw pan. the more i look at it, the more i like it. this is going on as is.

It looks like NASCAR grey in the picture.... but yes, leave it raw. Its not worth striping the powder off and sanding it smooth with the lines all going in one direction for a brushed look .... is it?

no, definitely not. i don't like the "grained" look, and i don't have anything that would make it look right anyhow.

i thought they had colored it at first too. but if you get up close you can tell that it is just blasted. the blaster did a superb job keeping it even and uniform. it almost looks like a really nice casting.
