The cheap, temporary fix cost me less than 10 bucks. I kept the old 3 speed that I pulled out for the swap. Bought a new output shaft seal, swapped the slip yoke on the driveshaft that I had also kept, and slid it back in yesterday.
I probably won't dig into the overdrive for a couple months at this point. I'm not in a rush to fix it at the moment.
The slots need a good polish, but I think they'll clean up well.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Didn't have much of an issue swapping the old 3 speed back in. The "guide pins" I made to install the overdrive a couple years ago proved their worth again yesterday.

The old 3 speed sounds like it's got straight cut gears in 1st and 2nd, but not in third. I added fluid until it came out the fill plug hole yesterday before going for a test drive. I still need to check if it needs more after running through all the bearings and such. It has been sitting dry since I pulled it.

What I don't remember is if the gear noise was present the entire time I was driving the truck with the old 3 speed. I've done a few things here and there since swapping it out that has reduced the overall noise in the cab, so it's quite possible that the overall cab noise while driving was drowning out the gear whine. Now the cab is much quieter, so the transmission whine is more noticeable.

Whichever way it is though, I'm going to run that transmission until it either blows up or I park the truck for the extensive rust repair. Fun stuff!

Re: Frankentruck

Nice to hear that the truck is rolling again, maybe you'll come across a nice 5 gear for the truck.

I've thought about a 5 speed swap, but with the expense involved and all the other related changes for the swap, it's more likely that I'll be rebuilding the 3 speed with overdrive

Re: Frankentruck

Just been cruising around town and doing some parts running. The old three speed does just fine around town, but man, I miss my overdrive. I'll fix it eventually

Re: Frankentruck

Bought nice things, yes that with the overdrive is a nice thing. I had a T5 WC in my Mustang and it makes long drives a pleasure.

Re: Frankentruck

Noise in NOT 1:1 is usually a cluster gear bearing issue.

Good to know, thanks. I'm not too concerned about how much life this transmission has left since I'll be going back to the overdrive transmission once I rebuild it.

Re: Frankentruck

Christian
Just my suggestion.
Put all those extra Transmisson parts in a small (Clear Tote).
You will thank me later.

I probably should! At the moment, they're all stuck to the two overdrive transmissions I have sitting on a bottom shelf dedicated to transmissions

Re: Frankentruck

As long as you know where they are

That is the Key.

When you get older /
like me.

It's like where did I put those parts .

Looking forward to the rebuild when you have time to show more about this Rare transmission.

Re: Frankentruck

Drove Frankentruck to C10s in the City today. Great time and lots of cool trucks. Saw this sweet 65 and am really considering building a set of side boards for Frankentruck. I think that would work well with the farm truck look I have going on.

Also hit all 5s earlier this week

I glad someone else pays attention to the Odometer Reading.

Those side boards are cool.

If you build Side Boards like those. / I got One Suggestion.

Well maybe Two

Well maybe Three

It would be Sawmill lumber sanded down.

I would use Sqaure headed bolts / So it was Era Correct and look like a Farmer done it.

I would also use a Forstner bit, so the square bolt heads did not stick out.

That would be a High tech farmers touch

Glad you had a Great time at the show.

Thanks for sharing the Pictures.

Tbone1964 hooked me up with a good odometer roll when I had him refresh my speedo. Maybe it was pulled out of a low mileage farm truck? I wouldn't be surprised if the cab and frame have over 150k miles on it

Re: Frankentruck

Yup, still driving around town and going to car shows and cruise ins.

Frankentruck will go back to daily driver duty on Monday for a week or two as mom's Civic got hit on the driver's front yesterday. It was enough to bend the front suspension but not enough to pop the air bags. Thankfully it was low speed from both vehicles and mom is good. Mom gets to drive the Dakota with A/C so I get to sweat on the way home from work

I've also started studying for the 4th and final CPA exam, so not much time to work on the trucks much. Can't wait to get that last exam done though!

We're getting some trees cut down tomorrow around the driveway, so Frankentruck got to take dad's boat over to a friend's house. If only I could skip work tomorrow and go fishing

Re: Frankentruck

The swap meet turned out ok. Sold more than I bought

I couldn't pass up adding another Igloo Kool Rest to the collection. I now have two large ones and one small one. I like the look of the black lid in Frankentruck better than the red lid. It fits better since the seatbelts are also black.

I definitely want to trade the red lid for one with a tan or brown lid to go in Penny.

On Sunday, I spent some time with friends getting lost in a corn maze and then watched the sunset from Amicalola falls.

Couldn't pass up the photo opportunity with the gorgeous sunset on Monday.
