Re: 1972 GMC Using 2003 Chevy 2500HD duramax Chassis

I have some pictures of how I did my brake pedal. I wanted to use the 2003 pedal. The 2003 has a large plate that mounts to the firewall. It has the hole for the steering column, and the hole for the brakes. I just lined the hole for the steering column of the plate, to the '72 hole on the firewall. Then I cut the holes out of the firewall to match the plate, and bolted it in. This puts the 2003 brake pedal too far to the left, so I had to bend it in the right location.
Here is a picture of the old brake pedal in it's original position, and the new pedal in it's original location.

Re: 1972 GMC Using 2003 Chevy 2500HD duramax Chassis

I made a template of the original brake pedal, and tack welded it to the floor so I could remove the old pedal and still know exactly where it was supposed to go.

Re: 1972 GMC Using 2003 Chevy 2500HD duramax Chassis

Then I removed the new pedal, and used a torch to heat it up, and bend it until it was in the right location of the old pedal.

Re: 1972 GMC Using 2003 Chevy 2500HD duramax Chassis

You should tack a couple guessets in the bends of the brake petal, after heating, bending and cooling youve compromised the strength a little, and since brakes are kinda important, it would probably be worth the 10 minutes to tack in a little extra support. Are you gonna have to do the same with the gas petal?

Re: 1972 GMC Using 2003 Chevy 2500HD duramax Chassis

Good luck on the inner fenders. Those were the biggest pain of my build so far. Trying to make room for 2 batteries, fuse block, surge tank and air box. What I would have given for an English wheel

Re: 1972 GMC Using 2003 Chevy 2500HD duramax Chassis

The frame on the 2003 is a lot wider than the 1972 frame. I had to cut out the inner part of the inner fender, and make a piece to fit the 2003 frame.

I needed a spot to put all the computers on the inner fender. I cut off the top and welded in a flat spot to mount them to. This idea is still in the works.

I have about a 1/4" clearance for the turbo piping. I think I might need a little more, not sure.

Here's what it looks like on the passenger side so far. I got the inner fender to follow the frame pretty good. Still needs some smoothing out, but it works. Sorry for the blurry pic.

Sounds like a good plan. Those inner fenders look nice. I had a lot of time in putting mine in and pulling them out trimming for all the piping. Later I plan to redo them do there is more area covering the engine. Keep up the great work!

Re: 1972 GMC Using 2003 Chevy 2500HD duramax Chassis

I just drilled new holes for the cross member. My wife is doing great. Thanks for asking. Just hit the 2 year mark that she has been in remission. I am working on the interior now. Trying to decide if I want to use the 1972 light switch, or all the 2003 switches.

Use the 2003 switches so I can copy your hard work. I'm thinking of using the 2004 stuff I have. I started cutting up my 71 instrument cluster to fit 2004 in to it. having issues with the steering column.

Look at Lazzardkng's build. He did a good job using the newer switches.

I have the opportunity to pick up an LBZ truck to swap into my C20. These might be similar builds... except mine is going to be bagged.

Read the whole build so far, wonder how many hours you have in this build so far. Or what someone would charge to do this conversion??

Re: 1972 GMC Using 2003 Chevy 2500HD duramax Chassis

I got the truck started. All I had to do was hook up the ground wires since I didn't cut any wires. I hooked up the batteries, and after 5 years of sitting it cranked over about 3 times, and started right up. The turbo didn't want to turn, but it's fine now. I had 0 oil pressure, but it was just the sender.https://youtu.be/_gxnzXOWzAk I made a video of it running.
