Re: Baby blue 1970 GMC LWB resto-mod

Pulling out the long tube headers tomorrow. Flowtech 1969 Camaro shorty headers and Remflex header gaskets going in. USing the existing mufflers and remounting them under the cab to make room for trailing arm movement. Not sure exactly what they are but they are loud and throaty and sound way too good to replace.

Re: Baby blue 1970 GMC LWB resto-mod

Hit the spot on both items! I'll be watching to see how the headers fit. I like your mid-length (or whatever the term is for that) better than the real short ones I've been shopping (like Sanderson's block huggers, that point more-or-less straight down).

And I can't stand oil leaks, Bro! I'll give $75 for a gasket that works. What does that gasket call for as far as bolt torque, if you know? I mean---as thick as it looks, I just wondered if it has a real narrow allowable torque range to keep from deforming. Looks high tech!

Re: Baby blue 1970 GMC LWB resto-mod

The headers I have I guess are technically mid length. As long as they don't hang down below the frame then I will be happy. The gasket has metal inserts where the bolts go through that only allow it to deform a certain amount. I honestly didn't look at the instructions. My friend (mechanic) installed it for me.

Its the Fel-Pro one piece silicone neoprene gasket with metal core. Its pretty much the best one you can get. You dont need to silicone 4 pieces of gasket together around the main-seals and pray it doesnt leak. Its expensive, but its worth it to not have to worry about pulling the pan again anytime soon. Summit racing has them cheap. Im in canada and they seem to retail for around $100. I got mine for $70 or so. I dont mind spending the extra to not have to worry about it. It was a couple hour job to swap the gasket out. Dont want to have to do that again.

Re: Baby blue 1970 GMC LWB resto-mod

Update: couldn't build a better fitting header if I tried. Absolutely perfect clearance around the frame and motor mounts. Please ignore my ugly motor. It's next on the list for attention and custom work.

Flow tech shorty (mid length) 1967-69 camaro / chevelle. Paid $140 new from Lordco auto parts.

Holy crap it's LOUD hahaha. Exhaust dumps down just after the cab. I'm not running it out the back until I get my bed floor cut out and get the truck bagged so I know where the axel is going to sit. Sounds amazing, but it's loud lol

Looks like the 73 and newer mounts (also used on 72 big blocks), same ones I'm using on mine.

Who is doing your exhaust? kit or custom? material? mufflers? Sorry for 20 questions, its something I need to start thinking about.

My buddy and I are doing it at his shop. He does exhaust. I reused all the existing tube and mufflers. It was a fairly new 3" dual exhaust setup that we cut out and rebuilt. Coyne automotive downtown. 991 Ellis st. Ask for Gil tell him Lonnie sent you.

Re: Baby blue 1970 GMC LWB resto-mod

Got my bags and plates in the mail today! Went and bought all my hardware to bolt it up and some good bits to drill the holes. Wow all the little things add up. $50 for grade 5 hardware, $100 for drill bits... I'm frightened to see what the total cost of this suspension is going to be when it's done.

My little dog has never seen an air bag before. He's so cute.

Re: Baby blue 1970 GMC LWB resto-mod

Well I FINALLY got all my CPP parts this week. Jeff from CPP was awesome and it was no fault of theirs. My parts were actually held up in Canada Customs for months due to an unpaid Brokerage bill owed by my parts retailer stores head-office in Vancouver. Thanks to Randy from KMS in Kelowna for making it all right in the end.

I got:
CPP gold power booster and master cyl with adjustable proportioning valve
71-87 CPP modular 2" drop spindles with 12" rotors and black powder coated calipers.
New 73-87 upper and lower ball joints and inner and outer tie rod ends.
CPP deluxe adjustable track bar for the rear axle.

MIght be a month or two before I get it all installed. Need to save up a couple bucks to get my buddys shop to install it all. Since they are brakes and installing them properly is a big safety concern, I am going to get it all professionally installed. In the meantime, now that the weather is nice, I am going to get my Accuair EXO mount bolted up and wired. Then i am going to pull out the wood bed floor and get my c-notch and rear bags installed and plumbed, 2" lowering blocks installed and adjustable track bar installed. Then the rear is pretty much done. The front end is going to be a lot more work and $$$ so I am doing it last.

Re: Baby blue 1970 GMC LWB resto-mod

Gotta love bringing home the boxes of parts, its like christmas... until you look at your credit card statement that is.

I stopped in to see Randy the other day, but he was holed up in the office on the phone with Vancouver. What do you wanna bet your parts were the subject of that call.

Glad you finally got them.

Yeah I ended up buying a lot more than I had originally ordered. That's why I have to wait a little longer to install it all now. Ran out of funds

Re: Baby blue 1970 GMC LWB resto-mod

Got my EXO mounted to the frame with the tank and compressors. All wired up and solenoid installed. Power cables and everything. Fired it up and it works like a dream. The dual compressors fill the tank in 1min 40seconds from empty. No leaks that I can see. Everything works like it should. Pulling out the bed floor and rear wheel tubs tomorrow. Shop time is booked all day next wednesday to do the c-notch, lowering blocks and bolt in the rear bags. Might even do the fronts if time allows. I have access to a plasma cutter so hopefully it wont take too long.

Re: Baby blue 1970 GMC LWB resto-mod

10 hours under the truck today... Got the back finished.

c-notches done
CPP 5" drop shocks
Air bags mounted on trailing arms
2" lowering blocks
CPP deluxe track bar

It sits 1" lower than this in the back when aired out. This is just lifted up a bit so I could pull it out on the street and forgot to drop it before snapping some quick pics.

Front end is getting done on Saturday.
