I may regret this, but what's a "bottle baby"? not familiar with that term.

Re: 1970 cst lwb project "Cheap Build"

NB look for a parts truck then check the build sheet for rear gear ratio...most of the time a parts truck will cost you as much and a set of gears and setting them up.....I just pull the hole rear paint it do the brakes and swap them....consider the rest of the truck Free so even if you turn it into scrap steel your going to get some $$$ back out of it....

Re: 1970 cst lwb project "Cheap Build"

I planned on this weekend to look at a couple of rear ends on the way to a family reunion. He says they have 3-series carriers. That's one of the biggest problems, people don't know what they have. Go and look and it turns out to be something else. A parts truck would be a good idea, but just nowhere to put it. Landlord is already letting us put the truck out back... only have two parking places in the apartment complex where we live. The bed is taking up one and the daily driver is taking the other. Thanks for the advice though.

Re: 1970 cst lwb project "Cheap Build"

quick up date

my Mickey Thomson 31/16.5/15's are GONE!!! yep bald evenly across but bald!! lucky for me I have a set of the same size wrinkle walls to go on!! I have 255/60/15's on it now and there a JOKE!!!!!1 roll on the peddle and I think the rims would be scratching the asphalt!!

I'm going to try to swap out the 3:73's for the 3:08's next week..theres a few shows that are between 150/200 miles one way that I would like to see and I'm not short on power. I could use the extra rpm on the BIG road..at 70MPH now I'm turning 3200 a bit tight on the caddy the 3:08 should tame that quite a bit while still making big torque...maybe the wrinkle walls will last a bit longer too!!

so far almost 3000 miles on it...love it...fuel milage is good ( I havn't checked it exactly but it seems to stay off E if I keep my foot out of it..guess is 15 or better) oil change next week..I'm runnning off road rotella 10/40 for the high Zinc.... witht hte 308's it should swing the speedo closer to where it should be

Re: 1970 cst lwb project "Cheap Build"

pretty much I think I explained it pretty well...but heres the short version

pull out the SB V8
remove the stock frame mounts
replace with 73/87 BB mounts
use eldo engine mounts
place 500 against the th350 as a guide and bolt down frame mount

remove 500
install new th400 with BOP pattern
bolt motor to trans and mount

the rest is prety much pug and play

check this out too

http://www.cadillacpower.com/forum/v...35723&e=135723

I did a ton of home work but it was pretty simple once I had gathered up the few parts

unfortunatly no
I tend to not want to hang around much for the smoke to clear...and I'm ussually leaving anyway.. another couple things about Pro Street tires is the tire compound is soft and when they get just a bit warm they really stick putting alot of strain on an already weak 2 piece Drive shaft so unless you want to find yourself road side you learn when to lift

Re: 1970 cst lwb project "Cheap Build"

ok well to add a few side notes....I'm hold off putting the new sneakers on the back since on the 25th there having some timing/speed runs..I hope to have someone snap a pic of a good burn out but no jokes about the one wheely squeely!!!

ALSO.....I found a 1969 Apache Falcon camper..the body and top frame are in great shape and it looks killer behing my truck..even if it is Green???...the canvas is GONE....I'm looking into a new top for it ...if that falls though then I think I'm going to try to refit a hard tonue cover on it and just use it to haul small stuff around or my tent, coolers and other camping gear..but the thought of sleeping on the ground is less than inviting for my old broken body?????

Re: 1970 cst lwb project "Cheap Build"

Well took my truck to the airport for some speed runs today ( sorry no times)

Did back to back 91 mph runs which I'm happy with since I still have the open pinion and it spun HARD for the first real 100 feet (probably more) even with a good tire warming burn out on the M/T's 31x16.5's ( it was Kool seeing my 1 wheelies squilie mark it was at least a foot wide and was way longer/wider than most)...the first run I peddled it 3 times in drive just looking for something to stick ....the second run was after a better burn out and I just grabbed it locked it into second till it shifted into 2nd then rolled it into drive..it tacked perfect right to 4500 in each gear hit 2nd and shook them again!!!

It was a great day to burn some 87 octane gas...yea I know I could have rolled some timing in it and run better fuel..but I had to get a load of fire wood on the way home ...LMAO!!!!!!!...it was nice to put up better #'s than alot of the stock imports..on a side note ther was a Vette there that ran a 129 to take the high speed bragging rights..then he said he was heading to the chower fest???

Re: 1970 cst lwb project "Cheap Build"

Thanx Guys...

I finally got the power brakes up and working and I will say that it should be a manditory for every board memeber...after taking it in the ass on a used booster and peddle assembly I just bought another one and like I said this is the best up grade..it rivals the caddy even with the drums still n the front...now that I can stop it I think I'll be able to drive it a bit harder...even tow my boat with it

Re: 1970 cst lwb project "Cheap Build"

This is a great thread and I am 99% certain I'll be doing the same swap in my '72 burb. I have read the entire thread, but I may have missed this.. What exactly did you have to end up using for the oil pan and pickup tube? What year, etc? Thanks

Re: 1970 cst lwb project "Cheap Build"

I got mine from Cadilac king in Cali...found them on the web...the pan and pick up tube is from an Eldorado..when I called out there they knew exactly which pan I wanted when it came the thing was spotless!! just beware these pans are known to crack around where the crank area is..its a huge bend for a stamped piece of metal which makes them thin in that area....

if you have any hesitation to do it I'm not surprised I DID big time but once I dove into it thing went really easy and I was doing it myself with a small hoist ( which I dont recomend)....if you use a short shaft trans its almost all bolt in but your going to need to drill 2 holes for the frame mount engine stand.....

when you get ready to do it give me a shout and we can chat and I can walk you though it in about 15 min on the phone....alll I'm going to say is if your burb doesn't have power brakes add them while your doing this!!! these 500's are a ball to drive but stopping them with manual drums sucks......the brakes are a bolt in and take about an hour...as far as all the beating and adjusting to the fire wall I found it to be all BS and my truck has A/C and I have had both valve covers off to put in new lifters and didn't even have to move the brake booster.....
