Brrrrr..

I know what you mean, really cold down (14 degrees or less) here as well.. my doors froze shut overnight with the rain the previous day. Took some time to thaw them out just to get to work. Too bad your not closer, I'd lend a hand.

Looks like its going pretty fast though, you'll be back in action in no time.

Drew

it could be worse of course...lol

Re: '71 Chevy 1/2 4x4

Nice progress. Good luck with the swap. Here is a trick I used on the side of the road getting semis unthawed. get a tarp, cardboard, wood, anything to put around the vehicle at the bottom. Place a salamander type heater in the side or at the front under the engine bay. It will heat up under there and the heat will rise. You can also use a metal oil pan and put charcoal in it and start a mini Weber fire. Just be careful with this as there is obvious open flames.

Re: '71 Chevy 1/2 4x4

So I started the engine swap on tuesday the 23rd, and today I got the newer engine in and running. I just need to adjust the timing and/or carb, and now I also need to replace the heater core. A friend of mine came over to help yesterday and acedently bent the heater nipples, and now they leak.

I want to say a special thanks to oldiron. With out him with his help, guidance, and knowledge I would still probably scratching my head. Thanks buddy!

Another thanks to lobofreak for coming over to help. Again with out his help I'd probably screwed up the install. Thanks bud!

Here is what the new to me engine looks like.

Re: '71 Chevy 1/2 4x4

I actually cleaned off most of the grease, but ya there still is a little left. The only noises coming from it was the valves when it first started, but it went away after it warmed up.

Re: '71 Chevy 1/2 4x4

I had a hiccup with the engine this morning. The starter from the other engine apparently was going bad, and it finally kicked it this morning. So I swapped it out and everything was fine. I also replaced the heater core, and checked the timing while I was messing around.

The engine runs great and I'm getting a lot more heat now.

Next thing I might get to this winter is changing out the radio to the AM/FM radio.

Re: '71 Chevy 1/2 4x4

Heck ya it does! That old engine was real tired. I'm starting to think that there was something wrong with the bottom end, but I guess I'll find out for sure when I take it apart to see what was going on in there.

Re: '71 Chevy 1/2 4x4

This morning I started the truck as I always do to get ready to go. after about 5 minutes I went back outside to kick down the choke, and I noticed that I didn't have any oil pressure then ....Well I fiddled around with it for a few then I decided to take my car instead. While I was out I got a call from my parts store telling me that my kick down cable for the trans was in. Since I had them on the phone already I asked to talk to my normal parts guy. I ordered all the stuff that I would need to replace the oil pump and he said that he would have it all ready for me when I got there. (Thats why I go where I go for my parts) Picked up all my parts and got to it when I got home. Since I was pissed about this I was talking to a couple other guys about it and they told me to check everything else out before I tore out the oil pan. So I did, and I started with the gauge lines. I hooked up a spare gauge pod that I have so I could watch for pressure while I cranked the engine. Strange I had oil pressure building. I started the truck up, and ya know what I found? I didn't have the distributer clamp on the distributer. I adjusted the timing the other day and I know I tightened the clamp and I checked the distributer, but I guess I should have taken a flash light to the clamp just to make sure.

Talk about a learning experience.

I also replaced the kick down cable. That was fun

Atleast you caught it and you didn't end up dropping the pan. Think how bad that would have sucked!

I know it. I was relieved when I figured out that it was just something simple, and I didn't have to spend the rest of the day trying to swap out the oil pump.

Well I do need to put in a new gasket between the pass. side exhaust manifold and pipe. But I'm not too worried about that. I guess these are the kind of things that happen when you're trying to do things for the first time, by myself, in the driveway, without all the tools to make things go easier, and in the freezing cold.

Just try to remember the KISS method when troubleshooting. Keep It Simple Stupid. A lot of times a problem can be something really simple that will get over looked most often.

Re: '71 Chevy 1/2 4x4

I was driving to my Mom's house yesterday, and the truck started running kinda funny. I limped to the closest park and ride and left it there for the morning (we had plans for my son to see Santa so the truck could wait). So I got to the truck and started checking the spark plugs, and I had 4 plugs were the electrode had melted. Good times to be had in the park and ride. I would have taken pics but the plugs are some where in the parking lot.

I think 3,4,6,7, but 7 the electrode broke and fused to the ground tab.
