Re: 1972 GMC "the beast" c20

i picked up a GM corp 14 bolt for FREE! off my uncle its out of his 87 diesel 1 ton p/u. its got 4.10's and a locker! so im pretty happy its definetly an improvement over my current gearing gearing should see at least 2mpg inc. and im hoping 60mph will finally be attainable

Re: 1972 GMC "the beast" c20

yeah lol im not familiar with the later years so im guessing since its out of a 1 ton it is a full floater im just used to seeing hubs sticking out lol, im hoping this axle will provide better mileage as it has 4.11 over my current 5.13's but the addition on a locker may negate that, but we'll see. i hope to get the axle into my basement and on to my work table so i can pull drums off redo brakes and clean it up. i have to modify it to fit my coil spring susp.

Re: 1972 GMC "the beast" c20

well the 14 bolt axle didn't work out turns out its a semi floater....but since we've had 48in snow in nh a local garage that had a flat roof, paid me 150$ each time to clean the roof 3 times, and i decided to trade that money for a rear end gear swap so the beast has 4.13's now!!! so much better then 5.13's
not that ive gotten the chance to drive it yet. no brakes...but! i got all my new parts this week(minus 3 coming tomm). cost me 170$ just for the two drums yuck. about 270-300$ total.
plus while at napa trying to get a price on a 1bbl carb, the owner instead refused to give me a price...but instead gave me free parts!! as in 2 1bbl carbs and a 261ciI6 3x1bbl intake and exh manifold combo. so i at least bought the 21$ rebuild kit off him for one of the carbs.
and i also got cliff ruggles quadrajet book and...the inline six power manual by lou santucci!!(still being shipped, grrr...) so long story short this build thread will be seeing lots of pics and typing in these next few days lol thank god i needed to search button my thread and i MISS DRIVING MY BEAST!!!

Re: 1972 GMC "the beast" c20

Congrats on the rear-end gear swap... and congrats on the soon-to-be daddy status! Life-changing event for sure. Hope all goes well.
Love what you are doing with your C20. Great to see your truck hauling hay and earning its keep!
I'm working on my '72 Cheyenne C20 and she was a farm truck most of her life.

Re: 1972 GMC "the beast" c20

and the truck parked in the "garage" as you can tell it was nite time by the time i finished, was a good days worth of work. oh and i found a use for the old shift knob, set it on pellet stove, once warm use like a massage stone on wifes back (our son is killing her back 5 more weeks!), wish i had a pic of her face when she realized she owed her thanks to my truck

Man, those sure are some terrible working conditions. I'd think your hands would freeze to the lug wrench.

Re: 1972 GMC "the beast" c20

they might have if i stayed outside long enough! lol ive doing doing short spurts. course now im at a major road block, i pulled apart both sides, i knew the pass side brake bar lever was junk i was hoping to use the drivers side as a model to fab a new one. but the po or po's mechanic removed it! and no stores in town have them available as far as they can say they dont exist! so i dont know what to do...im hoping a 13in brake bar will fit with minor trimming as mine are 12in...idk

Re: 1972 GMC "the beast" c20

for got pics but the other night i put carb on and started it up! found out the linkage hits the intake so it wont go below 2000rpms lol. choke seems to work though slowly. pulled the carb off today to grind intake down for linkage, and saw the whole intake had a puddle of fuel. thinking my floats were bad i pulled the carb top off the floats were good and still to specified level. fuel pressure is 3.5-4psi so not to much. im wondering if running at 2000rpms with choke on dumped so much fuel in the intake that it puddled from not enough air flow to move it to intake ports? or if thats what happens in 30* weather with no heat to intake?

Re: 1972 GMC "the beast" c20

X2 on the semi floater, it would have come out of a 3/4 ton from the 80s. The 1tons had a full floater in them. I know what its like working in them conditions since its almost March and we just had -28 this morning on the thermometer! Seen alot of them temps this winter. Build looks like fun and from the snow pics maybe a 4wd is in the works?

The old girl is looking good, farmer! I'm digging the headers and Thrush glasspacks on that truck, she must sound GOOD! I hope your wife is doing okay. I imagine you are busy with work and taking care of her.

Hey, I don't actually have a build thread, I'm way behind on that. Have to pull the heads off my baby and give em a serious valve job. Will post some pics soon.
