Off the shelf stuff. It's been awhile, but I remember finding a flange that had the same 3-bolt pattern as the turbo and around a 2.5" diameter hole. I then fab'd up the up-pipe in 2" tubing and then welded on a 2" > 2.5" increaser that fit inside the flange hole. Then, welded it all up.

At first I ran a gasket between the flange and turbo, but always blew them out. So, then I filed both flanges smooth and just put high temp copper gasket maker on it and bolted it tight. I haven't had any issues since.

The power honestly feels like double, compared to the original stock 250.
I also switched from the 3 speed to a T5 around the same time.

This project was a blast because I had 3 different moments to compare.
1. Stock worn out inline 250... old dog
2. Stock worn out inline 250 with the turbo plumbed in... well rested young dog
3. HiPo rebuilt inline 250 with turbo and hop up parts.... scalded dog.

A good GoPro vid of it.... coming soon

After a successful "Gas Monkey" project, aka Cropwell. I have turned more attention to JED.

I really liked the look of the Offenhauser carb hat, but in function, it lacked. The hat was designed for a 4.5" carb opening. I had to run a plastic adapter for it work on the Holley 5 1/8" spread. Plus, the air flow from the turbo was choppy at best. So, I went for a Extreme Velocity hat. These are supposed to be the best. The construction was awesome and from its looks, the flow couldn't be designed any better. Here it is on, but not painted the cast iron yet. For it's performance... whoa, read below.



Also, I was dealing with a real lag in building boost. I had modified the internal wastegate to open around 4-5psi. What happened it started to open at 2 psi and fully open at 5psi. So boost took forever to build and was a dog. So I ordered a Voodoo V, manual boost controller with a lightweight ceramic ball. I installed it and tuned it for a 10psi boost setting. Good GOD, what a difference!

Boost comes in much sooner and pegs right at 10psi and holds there. It actually raises the front end of the truck when the boost hits. While this was totally awesome, my AFR's are right at 12.2 when WOT at 10psi, a little high for my comfort level. I think a jet bump up will fix that. Believe me, the difference between 4 and 10 psi is Night and Day. Still shaking my head. I have this sneaky suspicion, that this setup is right at the point of breaking other stuff... trans, rear end...

For winter, either a built up TH350 or 700R auto tranny with a 2500-2800 rpm stall converter.

I cannot wait to launch a turbo'd inliner at 10psi with a dialed in auto trans!!

Nice work! Sounds like a great improvement. You may want to try setting the WG to 7-8psi for even better spool up. Once you get around double the WG setting you could run into the flapper blowing open too early even with the MBC holding back the signal.

Have you measured your IATs?

One great thread I must say for starters! Thanks for the info, not sure if I am gonna throw a turbo on my 6; but I'm contemplating and seeing this just makes me want to do it more! Nice job on the motor! Really looking good! On 8 pounds of boost a stock 250 makes around 304 hp. So I would say with the extra mods you have done yer making around 380 hp! Bet it pulls perrty good though! It is definately a V8 threat! thanks for sharing and to add to the stress....The videos won't work for me either!

Having driven small Ltr turbo cars for yrs

Thanks for the info. I have never measured my IAT's, and I am assuming that you are referring to intake temps? How do you do that? I have read many articles pro/against the idea that gas, blow-thru setups actually cool the intake charged air. I do know that an intercooler would help my setup. It's just time and $$$$ ,but isn't everything with old cars!

I do have a AEM wideband on the truck. A MUST for a turbo setup. I keep a close eye on it at all times. I like to see 11-12 at WOT

Yeah, Intake Air Temps. You could just use a multimeter with a temp probe as long it reacted fast enough (maybe rig a GM open element sensor and convert the values if it's an issue?).

I'm really not sure how much cooling you get from vaporizing the fuel only and not using an intercooler. Yes fuel cools some when it's burned. search "latent heat of vaporization" that's why you run a rich mixture. I'm sure non-intercooled blowthrough carbs are limited but it obviously works fine in many cases. At least you have researched it, I know I haven't.

Maybe a better direction is to cut to the chase and make yourself a pair of cheap knock ears (headphones, hearing aid amp, pizo mic on the block). With that setup I can easily hear knock as early as any modern OEM active knock system I have been able to monitor. Search "knock ears" it's an amazing tuning tool for not much money. You can buy a tool called the Steelman Chassis Ear too but it's no fun spending all that money. A friend gave me one though and it does work well for knock...

Hey,

Been trying to gather as much info as possible before I start my 292 turbo build. I have a holley 2300 350cfm on the way now, plan on doing the hanger18 mods with a GN turbo. Do i need to boost reference the fuel pump to bring up the pressure with boost? I plan on running the stock distributor, besides locking out the vacuum advance where should set the base timing to start tuning. I've read thru your thread and hopefully i haven't skipped over something important. I'm not looking for huge power, just like the idea of a turbo'd inline with air ride.
