Re: Crewcab "the rolling resume build"

Wow. It's been a little bit since I updated this, huh. So here I am, looking at what to do with the rockers, and I get this crazy heavy-duty idea. Since they are going to be so long, why not run a length of 0.125" wall tube? Something like this crude drawing. I will have to figure out what diameter tube I can use to make it look right, but I think it would be good for strength. Thoughts?

Re: Crewcab "the rolling resume build"

The outter rocker is as strong as it needs to be already, I think it would be a waste of time.
It would also give water an extra place to collect and cause rust.

A stock stamped steel rocker may be strong enough for a standard cab but I'm not thinking so for a crew cab. I personally think it is a good idea. I actually thought about something similar if I did my swap. (I'm trying to avoid a swap which means another tear down of my truck...)

New king pins, king pin master kit, axle shaft seals, and cross over steering arm. Once we figure out M14 studs for the hubs, we'll hang this hog.

Re: Crewcab "the rolling resume build"

So one of the hold ups to getting the chassis to a roller has been studs. The rear axle is a 2006 AAM 10.5 with M14-1.5 studs, while the front is a 1982 Dana 60 with 9/16-18 studs. The original thought was to convert the front studs to metric to match the rears. Out comes the Dorman catalogue...

The 77-91 GM Dana 60 uses 610-283

Knurl 0.650"
Length 2.53125"
Shoulder 0.9375"

Closest M14 stud for the Dana 60 610-437

Knurl 0.628" (-0.022")
Length 3.0"
Shoulder 1.0"

The biggest issue I saw with this was that the Knurl Diameter was 20 thousanths smaller.

Converting the rear seems like a better choice

2002+ AAM 10.5 (14 bolt) 610-431

Knurl 0.620"
Length 3.16"
Shoulder 1.378"

Closest 9/16-18 stud for the 14 bolt 610-194

Knurl 0.621"
Length 3.53125"
Shoulder 1.3125"

One reason the rear seems to be the easier choice, is that the 610-194 is the wheel stud for GM 73-91 DRW rear axles. So, the wheel studs that came out of the DRW Dana 70HD that we took off the chassis seem like a decent choice.

Any input on this choice would be appreciated.

Man, what's a better word for slow?

I don't think either of us have really had time to spare for anything this year!

We have been slowly crossing off to-do's on getting the chassis into a roller, and then we'll probably be shifting gears, I'll work on getting the sheet metal on the frame, because I will be doing all that at my house, and my brother will probably work on selling 2 of his trucks.

Next time I am down in Lancaster I will probably pick up the front and rear hubs to get them prepped for install. That's where we're stalled.

So it seems like its been awhile since we've made headway on this build. We've taken on other projects that have taken way more time than I think either of us anticipated

Both the 1ton and burb are 6.5's and I think the 1ton has permanently ended mine and my brothers relationship with the motor!!

Hook it up! If I could find one for less than a kidney (hopefully with a 5 speed attached) We'll drop that 6.5 like a... well, like a 6.5.

Especially since I cant get the cab out with where the truck is sitting now.

Ryan, seriously.

Re: Crewcab "the rolling resume build"

Slow slow build, but not stopped...

Got one of these made for my burb, and one for this truck.

That counts as progress

I am leaning toward using 10-32's to hold the spring on the back. I'll punch those holes when its time for that.
