Re: Found me a possible truck 1971 gmc swb

Cowl bolts are 1/2"
There's also some Philips screws, that's the one with the '+'

Can't wait to see what you do with it once you get it.

Vaughn - Out.

Round key for doors, rectangle for ignition is not a "GM tradition" until 1973. If you have a '67-'72 and it has them someone has changed the door locks. The ignition and doors used the same key on the '67 - '72 trucks, and they were the rectangular head ones.

Re: Found me a possible truck 1971 gmc swb

I stand corrected and actually just made up that little jingle. All my parents GM cars had dual keys and the ignition key to my 71 didn't fit the doors when I got it. That's what I get for being cute

edit: looks like 69 according to these guys, splains why mine didn't work

Re: Found me a possible truck 1971 gmc swb

Good news, the guy buying my cougar is getting a truck to drive the Cougar into, and will be here Saturday morning around 8 am or 9, after he buys it and we go to a notary, I will head down with a hauler company and my neighbors truck to go buy the truck

Re: Found me a possible truck 1971 gmc swb

What has excited me more than anything is being able to see it get winched up on the Rollback and having to be behind the tow truck to watch it go to my Grandmothers..

It won't fall through, I have everything planned and set out on what is going to be done

He advertised it was for sale on this very thread and expects everyone on the WWW to have integrity. Sometimes being quiet pays off. he could have just posted pics without posting the ad.

Re: Found me a possible truck 1971 gmc swb

I am wanting my truck to look like this

What type of towing mirrors are those again?
Mine has the bigger set

Thanks 70-K5, only problem I face taking it off is getting it back on
I guess since the Drive Shaft and etc are off, I am going to repaint them solid black before they are put on the New Transmission

Way to go SCHRUM.
Disreguard all the BS in your thread and stay focused.
You sir,... are now showing signs of maturity.

No drama.
Just truck related info.

Thanks man..I'm doing my best

Thank God for my pawpaw for having Carjack's.I'm probably going to jack it up and clean under it..and take safety precautions of course

Heck once I get it cleaned up.I told my grandmother I am going to get a sleeping bag and a pillow and sleep in the bed ..That is how much I love these trucks and excited to work on them..I will probably take Mechanics class in College to learn more on how to work on things..

Re: Found me a possible truck 1971 gmc swb

One thing I am eager to do while I Clean it count how many spiders I see or snake skins..I know for a fact I'll have to replace the Timing Belt,Spark plugs..hmmmm....trying to think what else..I know fix the side markers. With a little Mean Green and elbow grease it'll be done. When I lifted the hood I counted numerous of spider Nests..me and spiders do not get along...I'll scream like a little girl if I see a big one in there ..Then its to clean the tailgate's handle of the old wasp nest..May go ahead and sand the barely visible surface rust where the molding was, and Primer the bed sides..who knows..

and to think I actually considered trading my Cougar for a restored 69 Ford Ranger that was Red..Hope I don't get banned for saying that

Plus thank God I can get all of my parts for cheap up the way..I got a good friends brother who could weld for me

You mean fan belt? First off, do you know if the motor even spins over freely? You can do this by grabbing the crank pulley and trying to turn it. If the motor spins, throw a battery in it, dump a little gas down the carb and see if she fires up. If it does, then look into tune-up items. No sense in buying things that you don't need. One word (or a few) of advice to you, just remember, a LOT if not MOST of the guys/gals on this board have been where you are right now. Take in the good advice, let the bad roll off you. Time and patience will bring wisdom and knowledge....

Re: Found me a possible truck 1971 gmc swb

Yeah, main reason I said spark plugs on the distributor cap is ones missing..I can't remember if it turned freely..DANGIT ...I know I'll need a new battery..I can sell the one thats in it and get $10 down the road...I'll first get the correct battery and clean the battery tray and the wheel well below..Please pray with me that its not rusted through..The wheel wells looked pretty good..maybe I can clean them really good and spray paint them black

I did a little editing to the photo for my own picture

Re: Found me a possible truck 1971 gmc swb

Id start with finding a crossmember and getting the tranny back in. Get a couple compression fittings to reconnect the tranny cooler lines that were cut . Then look at geting the engine running. Things like draining the old fuel, changing the oil, replacing the points. After it fires id treat it to a can of seafoam to clean her up and then change the oil again.
