Well I called a local UK spares outlet for American cars.

The price for one set of shoes excluding delivery is £53.35

Total price for a full set then for me in England would be £122.00 or $152.00

This is a lot more than the approximately $48.00 plus local tax in the USA.

Looks like I am going to have to find a way of getting them from the US.

Glad you had such a fine trip and made it back home all safe and sound.

If your brake shoes are not worn into the metal they might be rebuilt. The bonded style or the riveted style can be relined with new brake pads. There may not be anyone in your area that does this type of work. Clutch rebuilders for big trucks can usually reline brake shoes too. Just a thought.

Back in the day you could buy just the linings and rebuild them yourself if they were the riveted style.

There are several companies that offer ling materials and rebuild brake shoes in the UK. They may be pricey though.

I think my brake shoes are now sorted put.

So it looks like TRUCK TIME is coming back to Grizz Towers very soon.

Tom who is a UKGSER forum member and was working in Roseville, Minneapolis last week for his company, managed to get his driver to take him along to O'Reilly's on the way to work on Friday before racing to the airport as snow was forecast.



Brake shoes as purchased.

Pic sent through by Tom on Friday morning meant that rather than pay $152.00 in the UK for a full set the were costing $48.00 plus about $20.00 for postage.



On Saturday I had a load of stuff to do like dusting, vacuming and cleaning all the windows as I do not have a woman here anymore.

One of the things to happen was that JohnnyBravo "Engineer Extraordinaire" was popping over to pick up the race car pump that my host Dennis had gifted him with.

Coffee, garage, extended visit was great.

Take a look at the size of the man.

Yes he takes up quite a bit of vertical real estate.



One of the best parts of the visit was that JB had brought me a piece of his home made Biltong (beef jerky)
The point to which it had been dried is exactly where I love mine to be.

Along with that stunning Case knife that Donnie in Arkansas had given me on the road trip.



Unless you know what emotional value a good knife holds for a guy like me, this will mean very little to you.
The knife makes me happy.
A great tool.

One of the other things this weekend was to tidy up the garage and move the truck over a bit.



Katy arrived by 4pm which was a great time to shut shop early.

We were off to have dinner with some good friends and late to bed.

I should have been in bed about three hours ago but it was better than a good book, just couldn't shut it down. You show the real side of America not what the tv news shows. I've been down there three times this year for short trips and always experience the same attitudes as you describe. And the pics from Clems and the rest of your trip, just fantastic. thanks for bringing us along.

Remember the 1930's Engineering shop Dennis and I visited in Philo, Illinois ??

One of the treasures I pulled out of there along with a load of other stuff that was probably destined for scrap was this early Chevy valve cover.

People do ask why carry that sort of rubbish halfway around the world??

Well, I had a plan to mount a load of things on a board that were from various road trips to America, Africa and Europe and hang it against the wall in the lounge. My house My rules.

Anyway I did clean a lot of them but thought many could do with a run through the full programme of my "kitchen mounted parts washer"



Resulting in this



Some bits like this original 57 Chevy hood ornament was pitted and covered in silver paint and filler even after the dish washer. So I scraped it clean followed by a Scotch pad.



The valve cover got some fine paper and Scotch pads too.



Etch primer



It was 5'C in the garage so the oil heater worked a treat.



Alloy wheel Silver for the bird and very Red for the valve cover.

First coat.



Two coats each and contrast on the mounting boards



Then work got in the way before I could complete it all.

More in a bit.

Even I was impressed with my hands relative steadyness.



Looking like this in the end.

Ready to be mounted up onthe bostd.



Thought I would post up one of the pics I sent Donnie in Arkansas.
A few of the knives in my collection. These all have stories attached as well. Two the top left were my dads favourites. Wooden handle he replaced when the bone eventually gave up.

White Swiss army knife I have had 25 years.
I dont think that common and possibly one of my most carried knives.

I was pleased.

Guess a lot of it is preparation.


The same reason I took so long on choosing the Pontiac hood ornament, unless I have a concrete plan to process stuff I try not to just grab for the sake of grabbing.

Which brings me to this set of pics. Still relevant to the 1930's shop and my trip.
There were two of these old horns and I selected this one with all intentions of fitting it to my truck.
It was tested and found to work just fine.
However my baggage limit and various items for other people that needed safe passage to the UK meant I left it behind with Dennis and a specific request that he take it to Roger for his 34 Dodge Pickup.
Roger was the guy we visited straight from the airport when I landed.

So another piece of Mr Johnsons legacy living on.

Had a lovely if stressful weekend

Came home Sunday night and found an envelope from Kaiser in Oregon state.

Greg while we were out shopping for Clems party.

Who in their right mind stretches a cab and doors on a C10' then shortens the bed to get the proportions right.

Contents was some stickers for various uses from "Bomp" who I had spent a lot of time with in the US during October.



Also a large box in the kitchen.

Opening it up revealed my new brake shoes for the truck. Generously brought from Roseville, Minneapolis to Ireland and then on to Stroud in Gloucestershire after which they got boxed and couriered to me by Tom "Topcat2006"
Thank you mate.

Of course this means that I can now get my finger out and start on the four corners of the truck to rebuild the brakes completely.




Looking forward to getting out into the garage and cold again.
