I got One Now

I posted theses pics on the main 67/72 thread page last week but guess I should put this on the official 67-72 Burb Tread.

Bought this localy and it had been sitting for 9 years, but luckily in a spot where the sun and wind didn't get at it. its a Custom/Deluxe 10, big block with front and rear A/C, tilt, posi , the 3rd seat and the highlander package. The trans is pooched and the motor turns over without any obsene noises but the gas sis not getting to the carb and I haven't had time to really dig into it as I'd luv to hear it run before the deep cold sets in here.

Anyone have any ideas why the gas might not be getting to the carb?

Re: I got One Now

Fuel probably has turned to sludge/varnish after nine years. Could also be rust clogging something. You may need to drop the tank and clean it out. Make sure to check the fuel filter also. Its probably clogged. After that you could have a bad or weak fuel pump. Finally your carb is probably gummed up. Might need to swap it with a clean one or clean the old one out.

If all you want to do is hear it run, take the rubber hose off the fuel pump and replace it with a longer one that will reach into a gas can. This might get it to come to life.

Re: I got One Now

Congrats on your purchase, and welcome to the burb family!

If I were you, I'd order up a new fuel tank and sending unit. Then replace all of the filters, including the one inside the carburetor but then I'd prolly tear down the carb as well.

Fuel that old is nasty, and moisture has prolly gotten into the system. So there is bound to be sediment, which will clogg up new filters you put in for a while.

I'd also go easy on the motor as well, by squirting a good oil into each spark plug hole. Let this sit over night or longer, then with all the belts off I'd put a socket on the balancer bolt and try to turn the motor over a few revolutions.

This will soften up any ridges that the rings might have imprinted on the cylinder bores from sitting so long, not doing this can prematurely wear the rings or even break one.

After doing this, I'd change the oil with a good 30wt oil and a new filter. Run it for a few hours, then drain the oil and replace with your desired oil and a good filter. When oil sits for a long period of time, as in your case it tends to get a bit rancid. So getting it out is good for the system, even though you may plan to tear down the engine.

With all this done you will prolly experience a few leaks, since the gaskets and seals may have dried out and or gotten stiff.

All this is what I'd do, others will have other remedies for sure.

Either way, go slow in reviving your new ol' burb at first.

Have fun, and be sure to share all of your progress with many pictures with all of us!

Re: I got One Now

More very good info vectorit. I agree with all this also. Anything mechanical that sits for long periods of time will need special care to get going again without damage.

Thanks one of the main reasons I bought this Burb was because of the factory options. Its going to take some time and quite a few $ to get her where I want but for me the fun is in the hunt for parts and doing the work. I dont know whats in the Canadian Base Equipment option but am thinking of ordering the resto package from GM and that will tell all about this Burb.

Re: I got One Now

First congratulations on getting such a nice burb. Second how do you go about getting a resto. package and what all does it give you. I would be very interested in getting that for my 72 burb. I looked into something like that thru the GM heritage foundation a few months ago, but they only had information packages on vehicles made after 1976. Any info. would be great thanks!

Re: I got One Now

I got one of those GM "resto packages" a few years back, and I was disapointed with it. It was basically a envelope that contained generic stuff, that covered a range of trucks. Nothing earth shattering or specific to my VIN that i supplied.

Hopefully they have improved, or if they still do it these days?

Re: I got One Now

I'm gonna guess on the canadian equipment package and say it basically a block heater and other things that would apply to winter and possibly canadian regulations that don't apply to the U.S. The restoration packet will NOT tell you anything specific about your burb, too. There isn't anything like PHS for chevy/gmc pickups, etc. Congrats on the purchase, it is extremely nicely optioned. I will echo the others and have the tank replaced or flushed and all of the lines replaced as well as fuel pump and filters. Good luck on your project!

When I stand there looking at my Burb now I ask myself, "What did I do" and "Where do I start?" realizing how much work and money will need to go into this Burb to get it where I want it. I guess I have to sit down and figure out what I want to do with the Burb and then make a plan. I like the look of your Burb and really like the orange paint color. I'd like to see pics of your interior.

Re: I got One Now

Hi Blaine: When I bought the Burb I had line on a garage ( for a reasonable rent ) where I was gonna store the Burb. At the 11th hour the owner changed their mind and all other garages I have found are way too pricey. I have it advertised and if I sell it, well I'll find another Burb but if I find a garage for reasonable rent I'll probably just store it till I get around to starting on it.
