Re: Pic Thread: Not Just El Caminos

Holy cow, I hope that rig has a rear stabilizer bar! I have rear tire pressure set 10 PSI higher than the front to reduce oversteer (even when not towing the travel trailer), and am thinking about putting a rear stabilizer bar on my truck, in addition. I can't imagine how that thing's oversteer is. Looks cool, though.

Yes, that looks like a pop-up. That makes it less outlandish for driving around.

If I had a camper that small my wife would certainly kill me. That's why I have a 37 foot motorhome and even with that I'm taking my chances.

Women who love me doesn't necessarily mean that they like me. Close quarters are not a good thing.

So Paul is on The Samba now. That place seems to be the VW equivalent to this place.

I guess me and my dad aren't the only ones to chop a Karmann Ghia in half

I was trying to figure that out too. I have no clue. This is close to me and the guy is asking 2K for it. I could call and ask but I'm afraid that I might buy it. It's pretty rough right now but I think with some work it could be something cool.

You tell me what you think it is? I'm scratching my head.

I've been on The Samba for years. I'm a VW guy too. I was looking for a Ghia and stumbled on this.

I doubt a junkyard would give $2,000 for that mistake of a ruined Karmann Ghia with no drivetrain and not really a body anymore. I don't think that back end is just from one vehicle. I don't hate it that much but I see no value outside of parts

I forget what these were called. A diesel could get 50 mpg

You just have to be a tease don't you.

I remember those little Diesel pickups. I remember that they got crazy good mileage. I could sure use one today with fuel prices what they are. But I haven't seen one in years.

I would never pay 2K for that Ghia pickup. But for the right price I would buy it. It's got the weird factor going for it. I like weird stuff.

This is kind of the same concept. I think it's ugly but I'd drive it all day long.

That Mercedes is beautiful compared to the El Karmino Ghia. I some some really nice VW pickups but I'm not allowed to attach them. I hate that. It's on the internet for all to see already. and I remember their name now, "Caddy". Pretty cool name, honest. A caddy is a thin g we used to carry a little bit.

VW is looking at producing a vehicle like that last one for the USA market

I also hate it when they wont let you post pic's that are already on the net. What's the point? If you want to post naked pictures of me on the net I don't care. Unfortunately no one wants to see that.

I think that new VW is called a Caddy because all it can carry is golf clubs. It doesn't look like it has much of a payload. I wonder if it comes with a soccer ball and a baby seat? It looks good but it's just another SUV with a tiny bed.

Re: Pic Thread: Not Just El Caminos

It's those old VWs that were called a Caddy. When I searched for pictures, all I saw were people calling them Rabbit Pickups. I knew they had their own name but I can't remember where I left my memory. I searched "name of rabbit pickup" (w/o quotes) and BAM! In big letters at top of screen, "CADDY".

That last new one I showed said it was the prototype. I found all these searching "vw pickup pictures" (no quotes). I didn't see the El Karmino. I dunno. I like funky as well. But for some reason I just feel sorry for that Ghia. I love Ghias. Wish I had bought one. Back when Bugs were so big in the 60s/70s I wondered why I never saw anyone do the sporty Euro things to the Ghias that they were doing to the Bugs. I couldn't stop imagining a Karmann Ghia with everything I did to my '56 Bug. A poor man's Porsche for sure! The hopped-up Ghia certainly did become a thing at some point

Ghia's were expensive. Like an El Camino. That's the reason I never got either one. They were just out of my price range.

I remember seeing Porsche 914's going for less than a Ghia convertible. Same with Trans Am's. I've heard them called "Poor mans Corvette'. That is not the case. You can probably get a similar Corvette cheaper.

I stumbled on that Ghia pickup because I was looking for a Ghia. But I think that I'm going to scratch that idea. Too much money. There was a guy here selling one for $5800 firm and it was pretty beat. I thought no way but he sold it.

Once in a while you see them come up cheap. I found a nice Bug on CL for $2500. The ad was only up a couple of hours when I called the guy. It was already sold.

Re: Pic Thread: Not Just El Caminos

I had one of those diesel Rabbit trucks as a company service vehicle back in the early 80’s. That lil truck was a slug, when you had a long hill coming up on the interstate you really had to get a run at it to be going the speed limit when you crested.

Never heard of them being called a Caddy. But it was a vehicle I had zero interest in, just drive the heck out of it for work

Re: Pic Thread: Not Just El Caminos

I drove one company truck back in the 80's. I just called it a Rabbit pickup. It was a diesel and yessir, it was a slug alright but in a flat land town it did alright and it was thrifty on fuel. I never understood how it was called a Caddy but some groups still refer to them as that.
My father in law bought a new VW Dasher diesel in 80. He ran a paper route and said for the first 6 months or so he had to turn the A/C off and back up some small hills cause it wouldn't pull up going forward.
It did get about 45 mpg though on the flat ground.
If I'm not mistaken VW only made the little pkup two years. I wouldn't mind having one today just to fool around in.

Reminds me of the Plymouth Arrow company truck I had way back when. What a gutless useless steaming pile that thing was. But that's what they gave me so that's what I had.

I had to get on the freeway once and it was a short onramp. Really short and there was a hill behind it. I got on and suddenly there was a 18 wheeler semi truck flying down that hill right behind me..Closing in fast. So I punched it... Nothing...I had the pedal to the metal... Absolutely nothing. I'm lucky that trucker must have had some good brakes because I couldn't get out of his way in that pile of junk.

Here's one. Right where it belongs.
