64 c10 tax return refurbishment

So I’ve got a 64 c10 with a straight 6 that I had assumed for years was the correct engine.

Keep in mind this is a Canadian truck.

I know they either had a 230 or a 292, engine block casting # confirms it’s not a 292 but either a 250 or a 230. I removed a spark plug and the top of the piston looks flat which should make it a 250. Other than removing the top end and measuring the stroke how can I confirm what I have?

Bought a bunch of well needed parts to get it chooching a bit better. Whatever parts that gets removed gets cleaned up and painted before it goes back on.
I’ve been trying to find what colour the engine is suppose to be and I’ve narrowed it down to the Chevy orange ( which is what it was when I bought it ) and the light blue ( which is the colour the intake manifold was after I cleaned it off ).

So questions are:
How do I find out what engine I have?
Should I splurge on a 292 and build it?
What colour is my engine suppose to be?
Is the intake and exhaust manifold the same colour as the engine?

None of the engines in 60-66 Chevy trucks were orange from the factory, so my guess is that you have a later engine that's been swapped in. Sounds like the PO used the stock intake though which is why it's blue

Believe Canadian Chev trucks got orange engines. Lots of little differences up here on 60s GM stuff.

Re: 64 c10 tax return refurbishment

I tried calling a local Chevrolet dealer to see if they knew where I could get more info on the truck, no dice. Is there a VIN decoder somewhere that would tell me what the original truck configuration was?

Can you measure stroke by inserting something into spark plugs hole? Like a wooden spoon for a dial indicator?

I’ll try it out, who know the stroke off the top of their head?

If I remember correctly 230 is like 2 1/8” and 250 is 2 1/2”

Ooh, I wasn't thinking about that. Thanks for the correction!

Re: 64 c10 tax return refurbishment

Boy, did I open a can of worms.

got everything off without breaking anything, then I noticed the studs that hold the manifolds together a little bit corroded and figured: what can go wrong? lets replace these.

I broke one stud and I could not get it extracted, buddy broke the other and could not get it extracted, welding nuts did not work, torch caused 2 fractures in the exhaust manifold, machinist helped me out and replaced the studs and planed the manifolds individually ( also blasted and painted ).

manifolds planes are not lining up, drilled out bolt holes to get enough room so they do, got it back together and I have an exhaust leak I can not pinpoint.

The fuel pump is behind the motor mount on the passenger side of a 292.
On a 250 the fuel pump is in front the passenger side motor mount

It looks like you have a 250 CID from the casting number in your photo. See the info on the link below.

Re: 64 c10 tax return refurbishment

If you want to find out the original configuration of your vehicle, you can request that info here: https://www.vintagevehicleservices.com/option-info

Vintage Vehicle Services is in Canada. I got a report for my truck. It will tell you the original equipment on the vehicle, where it was sold, etc.

Here are some photos of the report, and an information pack that I received as well.

There was a mistake on my report, as the motor has a 1 bbl carb not a 2 bbl carb as shown.

Click on the image for a full size view.

Regards,

Chris

Re: 64 c10 tax return refurbishment

I had a 250 in my truck when I got it and I remember something about the position of the distributer is different on the 250 and 230. I think my 250 had the distributer towards the front of the block and on the 230 it was near the rear of the block. I think that is right but not positive.
