Clicking in the engine - Where would you look?
I have an Olds 455 in my '64 and it has developed a clicking/clacking when I accelerate and rpms are above 2000. Engine oil was metal free as was the Wix filter media, thankfully. I'm in the process of readjusting the roller tip rockers. I've retightened the exhaust manifold bolts and they were good. I'll be checking the flexplate bolts, too.
What else should I be looking into? Can roller tip rockers be loud? |

Re: Clicking in the engine - Where would you look?
Diagnosing noises over the internet is at best, difficult.. "Clicking/clacking" when accelerating.. What happens when the speed levels off?? What you're hearing could be detonation or pre-ignition from excessive ignition timing or compression for the gasoline octane.. Also, could be carbon buildup causing hot spots that pre-ignite the charge. Before you go charging down a rabbit hole, I suggest you take an experienced mechanic for a ride and let him listen to the noise.

If the intake manifold has an exhaust crossover, check those places. Old exhaust gaskets can leak even if the bolts are tight. Check further down along the exhaust system. Your description of noise during more foot in throttle is consistent with an exhaust leak.
A dying power steering pump can mimic engine noises. |

Re: Clicking in the engine - Where would you look?
First thing I would do is check the timing and pull it back 4 degrees.
That might be detonation you’re hearing. |
