Something else I can try.

Is going past “A” advancing the timing?

Zero [0] is Top Dead Center
A is advanced
Each line is 2* [IIRC]
So one line above A = 12*

Re: Tired Straight-6, upgrade to V8?

I have a very similar truck. 1963 Short Fleet. It had a 230 when I got it. Toyed with the idea of an LS or a Gen 1 SBC. I decided to keep it old school and swapped in a 292 “big block” six. I freshened the motor but kept stock parts, added cast iron headers, and an offy intake. I also swapped out the three on the tree for a T5. The truck has 3.73 rear gears. It will pull gentle hills in fifth, steep hills it will slow down a bit. In fourth it will climb anything. Cruises at 70 very comfortably. It’s a nice cruiser that idles at 500 RPM and pulls smoothly from there. Perfect motor for a truck but not intended to race your friends….

If you haven’t seen it already, check out Twelve Bolt Tom for inline six parts. He is seriously into these motors.

Re: Tired Straight-6, upgrade to V8?

My 250 was leaking oil from the rear seal and using a fair bit of oil. Upon disassembly I found stuck oil rings. Pouring water down the carb at fast idle may have fixed that. The camshaft was also not long for this world so I put in a farmer (me) overhauled 350 that so far am quite happy with. I don't think fuel consumption is much different either but power is much better.

Re: Tired Straight-6, upgrade to V8?

The sixes are definitely easier to work on and pretty cool to look at. The power of a V8 is super fun.

For your immediate power loss issue... Like the other guys have suggested, smart to check timing and think about a 2bbl.

I might have missed it, but have you checked your fuel filter (or in-tank sock) or checked rubber hoses for possible kinks or internal degradation which can also limit flow? Those problems don't show up at low power, only when you're trying to get a little more power for a hill or heavy load. Easier than swapping an engine. :-)

EDIT: Oh, and I am a broken record on this issue, only because I've done the dyno work with the product... Try a couple of bottles of Techron Concentrate at the recommended dosage (one bottle ounce per gallon of fuel tank). In my work, clean vs. dirty intake valves shows a 5-6% power difference (not huge, but it might be enough to get you over the next hill). And Techron Concentrate can clean the valves to make them flow as well as when they were new. But they can't work miracles with valve sealing, that's a machinist's job. ;-)

Re: Tired Straight-6, upgrade to V8?

When I was a kid my dad had a 67 1 ton dually work truck that had a 292. It always impressed me with the power and torque of that engine.
