Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?

I've searched for C253 and nothing comes up.

From my searching, I think the 3 in C253 means longbed fleetside.

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?

**edit** Nevermind! Found it. "H" is Fremont. Roger that.
___________________________________________________

I've checked all the numbers on this truck I brought home.

The frame, the body, and of course the title, all match.

Assembly plant code is an "H".

If I missed this somewhere in this thread I apologize, but I actually did use the search button.

Here's a shot of the VIN, and yes, the numbers on the truck match, so what gives?

Was it made in "Hell"?

GMC:
Translate your VIN number for your GMC and narrow down just what year your truck should be.
Go to the VIN Number Conversion Page http://www.6066gmcguy.org/VinNumber.htm of this site to find more info on this.

not really , all that you will be able to determine is the year, assembly plant, and serial # from the donor truck.

Question Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?

This information is great. It is missing one thing and that is why I cam back to the site. I need to get an oil filter for my 1965 GMC truck and the parts house asked if the truck was VIN Code A or B or if it was VIN a VIN code C or D. The filters are different. My GMC is just like the one in the PIC the says GMC TRUCK DD and the VIN ends with a B. Is it VIN code B or D? Thanks in advance for any help you guys can give.

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?

that has to do with gvw.what eng does it have , v6 or i6? it is more than likely a canister type filter. bolt thru it? or a spin on.
he more than likely doesn't know so he is asking a bunch of questions
what model is your truck?

Question Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?

It has the 305 V6 and it is a canister type filter, but there are two types and they look different. The computer system in order to get the correct canister filter asks if the VIN series it A/B for one style or C/D for the other style. They are different enough that I don't want to get the correct one. I was just wondering if I go off of the DD that is next to the GMC TRUCK stamp or the B att he end of the VIN number. If I look at the wrong letter I can potentially get the wrong style canister oil filter. I was just wondering how to figure out How I can tell if it is VIN Series A, B, C or D.

the difference is the size of the filter cartridge. just take your old one off and the size will give it to you. there will more than likely will be a part # right on it
eg
fram # ch33apl 9.05"tall id 1.44" od 4.45"
fram # ch106pl 6.25" tall id 1.28" od 3.69"
now if that partsperson had a clue they could have told you that. I just looked it up.the other possibility in 50 years that eng could have been changed. again just pull the old one off to make sure what you have first

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?

Hey everyone. I've got a 66 and I've scoured the interwebs for something to "decode" my particular VIN with no luck. Everything lines up great with all the characters EXCEPT the 4th digit.

I can't figure out what that "3" means in the 4th character slot. A friend of a friend worked for Chevrolet for decades and has never seen anything like this. His best guess is that the truck was originally a chassis cab, but no decoders indicate that as an option. Anyone know what this means?

You are most likely correct. . It was probably purchased/built as a cab/chassis. ..

here is what I came up with:

It is a gmc vin.

the first number "1" is actially an "I" - a common mistake by the dmv -they will often mistake I's and O's for 1"s and 0's.
the "I" stands for inline 6 motor.

10= 1/2 ton
02= 127 wb-long box wheelbase
P= pontiac michigan assembly plant
D= 1966 inline 6 gmc
19514= serial number
A=6000lb weight rating.

hope this helps
all this info is from here: http://www.6066gmcguy.org/VinNumber.htm

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?

Here is mine.

If I seen most of the comments of this thread I have...
1961, 4x4, 1/2 ton, surburban(or carryall), from Oakland(CA?), production #8476.
I'm not sure if the stamped 061 or the 97 on both sides of the Chevrolet are stock or added on by someone. Does any on know or have an idea?

I see some forest service green hiding there under the door weatherstrip.... I am going to guess that the 061, and 97 were stamped there by the forest service to keep track of the vehicle...

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?

Hmm, I will have to do some checking around, My dad had mentioned that too, thinking it was a old forest service rig because of the darker green color. I will see if he and I can find out more info and get more history on this rig. That sure would make a good story about it!
Thank you, jonzcustomshop.

Can someone give me a hand with this one? There's a couple things I can't seem to figure out. Truck's in Canada, but that doesn't mean it was made here. It's a 65, btw:

seems like there is a # missing if it is an american vin tag: c=2wd,15=1/2 ton lwb, 4= pickup, there should be a 5 here for 1965, a= atlanta, 102495=the vin.

here is the vin wiz with a "5" added in the right spot:

.VIN Format: 1965-1966 Chevrolet truck

Decoding: C1545A102495

Digit Usage VIN Decoded
1 Type C Conventional (2WD)
2-3 Model 15 1/2-Ton, Long Wheelbase
4 Body 4 Pickup
5 Year 5 1965
6 Plant A Atlanta GA
7-12 Sequential Serial # 102495 102495

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?

Don't think this has been mentioned before, but for the body(4th digit) a 3 designates a cab and chassis.
Also, in my vin, KC3836T120636, what does the first K stand for? The truck is a 1966 2wd 1 ton, 157'' wb. I decoded the vin already, and the only thing that i didn't get was the K and the 38, which i assume is for the 1 ton part. Thanks in advance for the advice.
