gas tank removal

ok, got all the boltsout and the tubes unhooked, now ow do I pull the filler neck out of the gasket? is got some gas in it still, tryinto get the ol' stepside running and the tank smells real badand some rust inte filler neck gotta nother one to go in, no new gasket though, so what is the trick?

If you soap the gasket up you can "stuff" the seal through by working it with your fingers or you can soap up the outside of the filler tube and pull it through, without the cap on it. If the seal is bad, they available for approx. $5 from most of the vendors.

When you go back together, putting the seal in the body first and soaping the fill tube works pretty good. (Someone on the board suggested this procedure, and it works well).
