Re: HD Roof Rack On Suburban
Sounds like a rubber version of the nutcerts. I really don't want to mess with that headliner. Other than the hassle, it's still in good shape and I'd like it to stay that way.
I appreciate your help. I've been thinking more about it. I got discouraged when I realized the hatch comes way above the roofline when open. This would mean the racks would need to sit way up off the top and I was wanting something low, lean, and mean. My '91 Suburban had cargo doors (& tailgate models have window in gate) and that was an issue I didn't consider. Now I have decided to make them shorter and give up having a bar across the back, beyond the body, that I can lean things into. Just have to set things on the back bar while laying flat and slide on... carefully.

Re: HD Roof Rack On Suburban
Tim,
What about cantilevering the top of the rack from forward of a clear space for the hatch. Then... make the top bar stick farther out and removable like your wanting for loading. Yes it's an added hassle (slightly) buy you get the look and still have protection. Mike

Re: HD Roof Rack On Suburban
With your idea I thought about a sliding extension. I could make it to slide inside the side rails and tighten with a bolt like on an engine crane, I think I'll start drawing some plans/details. I think with not a whole lot of 'technique' I can load by sliding ladders, scaffold, lumber on w/o needing to lean up against vertically. Also, I can put the bar right at the front edge of the hatch and still lay one end of a board up with the other end on the ground...with the hatch down. actually, on my other truck I had a work top with hatch. whenever I loaded the rack I just pulled the hatch down.

Well nuts. Ebay and McMaster-Carr have them. Also let me know if/when you want measurements.

Re: HD Roof Rack On Suburban
Thanks, I'll look into those. If you post how far from where I'll write it all down for whenever I do get on this. I'll keep nit in the glovebox cuz I know how I am about finding things 'later' (I'll probably forget it's in the glovebox anyway). Heck, I'll just go ahead and put marks on the top. That way everybody can ask me what are those marks for

Re: HD Roof Rack On Suburban
I thought I would bring this thread back up. A few years gone by now and lots of cheap Suburbans out there to play around with. Anyone picked one up and done a rack yet?
I'm thinking I'd like to find another, a fancy one this time. This '95 I want to do a solid axle swap on and continue with the work truck vibe

Re: HD Roof Rack On Suburban
Bumping this thread. Tim did you ever get a rack installed? I too want to add a roof rack to my 99 Suburban that lacks factory roof rails.
Any guidance on install options? Anyone have photos on the inner skin minus the headliner? Curious if there are holes in the inner skin that will allow access to the outer skin at potential points of attachment for an OE set of roof rails or an aftermarket/custom metal rack/basket.

Re: HD Roof Rack On Suburban
No rack here. I kind of drifted away from the idea. At this point, after driving it six years, I'd like to find another daily driver and make a project out of this one. I would still like to build a rack on it, though

Re: HD Roof Rack On Suburban
Thanks Tim. There’s a shop near me that can fab up a rack. I’d sure like to know what’s under the headliner for planning. Removing the headliner probably isn’t quick and easy I suspect.

Re: HD Roof Rack On Suburban
The headliner is one reason I have hesitated till I decide to go deeper, once I buy another daily vehicle. The headliner is still hanging in nicely and I'd like it to stay that way. I also want to add clearance lamps. Same thing, don't want to mess up the headliner at this point.
I want an adventure style full roof rack, like the old Con-Ferrs. I want the ends open for carrying ladders and such, then have clamp-on attachments for carrying kayaks

Re: HD Roof Rack On Suburban
Over the summer I’ll do my best to locate a salvage yard burb to glean some info from. Like you I want more utility and ease of transporting canoes, kayaks, etc.
I’m thinking that rivet nuts could be used to attach feet without removing the headliner and only drilling the outer skin. The rub is not knowing the depth of the dead space at various points between the inner/outer skins. Thinking three feet each side with two rivet nut attachments would be solid and distribute the weight well enough. I’ve seen a detailed write up of the marker lamp install. That’s done without having to drop the headliner surprisingly. The holes are drilled though the outer skin only and the harness fished through a hole near the top of the LH A pillar. The pillar trim is removed to run the lead to the dash. I’ve got this in mind too.

Re: HD Roof Rack On Suburban
I never thought about doing that. Just figured since there is a headliner that can be dropped I'd do it that way. I have installed cab lights on 67-72s that way.
On the rack mounting, I believe the mounting points for the factory racks will be in the substructure, just no holes in skin. I would like to see where the wiring and a/c lines run. I've meant to go find one in a junk yard to investigate and make drawings.

Re: HD Roof Rack On Suburban
Here’s a link to the thread that details the cab light install: https://www.gmt400.com/threads/cab-light-install.117/
I bet you’re correct about the mounting points. To think of all the burbs I’ve passed by in salvage yards over the last ten years or so out west and now have none near me to pick just kills me.

Re: HD Roof Rack On Suburban
Here’s a (sort of) related roof rack install on a suburban. I was interested in seeing the rivnut install: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4eT7zMoa-U

Re: HD Roof Rack On Suburban
That's nice and simple. I wish we had rain gutter. I have four pieces somewhere for mounting to the roof to act as rain gutter mounting points. But I'd really like to locate and use factory rack mounting points. Did you see this guy's rack video?
What I have in mind is a welded steel tube rack. I may do aluminum. But I want it to be plenty tough without mass I have my own idea, but here is a welded one
