61' Worth Keeping?

Good evening, coming back from Hawaii this week to do some training and picking up both of my trucks. I have a 79' SWB that runs and drives and this 61' I picked up from my dad. It's been hanging out in the yard for the last few years. Original 6 cylinder that ran when the points were dialed in a few years ago. SWB stepside. I know the 61's is a unique year but I'm trying to decide if its worth keeping around or just selling when I get to Texas. Right now I'm thinking selling. Any opinions would be appreciated. New glass, new gas tank, has rust in the normal places along with patina but would be a cool truck. Just having the 79' as well makes it difficult to keep two around.
Thanks!

Just scrub it down with a gray scotchbrite, and use Poppy's patina to clear it and drive it. Liability insurance is like 25/mo.

If you decide to sell it, it's worth more if it's being driven.

Re: 61' Worth Keeping?

Good call with getting it mobile. Thats a thought. With having limited space, I will probably only be able to ship one back with me if not having to store them until I move back from the Island. I have about a year to work on them though. It's just not having a garage and such that makes it difficult to have more than one. If it's worth keeping it vs selling is more so what I'm curious on with it being a 61'

Re: 61' Worth Keeping?

Imo, a non driving truck can fetch 2k+ less than a weekly driver. Even if you only drive it for 40 miles a week, you know what it needs.
If not driven it could cost the new owners up to 1k to get it ready to be a daily driver.

I just bought a 67 C10 for 1k dollars, rough but 96% complete. I need to spend 600.00 to get it running and stopping, and it will sell for 4k easy.

Your choice.

That just because of preference for that year or you think it’s a better investment?

What shape is the area above the windshield inside and out on the 61?

Re: 61' Worth Keeping?

You can always have a side by vehicle

If you wanted , you can get cheap insurance just enough to have it on the road

The 61 looks cooler than anything thats on the road now , imo

Re: 61' Worth Keeping?

So many variables....money, space, time, family, and of course the will to do it. Years ago I would have said keep it. Now with things being the way they are, ...inflation, price of fuel and parts, liability insurance, registration etc...it can make having two seem pretty extravagant . As for if it's worth it financially?....if you did the minimum to get it running to sell, then sold it, and put the cash into a money market CD type savings account (which are reaching 5 percent now) you'd probably be money ahead in the end. If you had outstanding debt, which runs at a much higher percentage than 5,...well then, I say take the money and pay that down instead because debt interest payments are like leaches on your paycheck.

Keep it and build it. Start stocking up on parts now you know you will need. You will regret it if you sell it.

Re: 61' Worth Keeping?

Am I reading this right? Are you shipping it from Hawaii to Texas? I'd think any money you'd make would be wasted on shipping.

To answer the question I'd keep it. It looks solid and a good builder.
