I would ask to speak to his immediate boss, then go up the chain raising cane until I got my money back. Or you could sit in the parking lot with it and tell every one who comes by what happened and how they treated you.

what a piece of sh$t. i would definatly raise some hell if they wouldnt take it back or do anything about it. you should just build your own and beef it up so you never have to have that prob again.

Thats part of it. They should have put the cylinder push point about 2"-3" forward directly under the upright for the strap, that way it would spread the load out over the length of the beam not concetrate it at the weakest point in the beam. The way they have the strap its minimally effective. Probably 200 lbs over the beam rating with out the strap. Which would be just the tube rating.

Faulty design no doubt about it. If they moved it from the green line to the yellow line it would be fine.

The one branded AC Delco is in the right position. I don't know about the others. if you have a hoist and as long the cylinder push point in directly under the upright for the strap the hoist if ok.

This may be helpful in getting their attention.

it looks like this may be the first use of the hoist. does the front hole show any signs of use? (ie. wear marks from the bolt)
my opinion is the tube has a flaw in the grain causing a freak weak spot.
I got mine from Sam's Club. I use it at work. I even made a longer boom insert to get to the end just above the wheels. at this length I had a full dressed BB going in a Topkick with no problems.
good luck, dont take any crap from them. settle for nothing less than a full refund. then go buy another one elsewhere.

Ratrod, I have one of these. If you wind up buying another kind. It's the heaviest duty hoist I've ever seen. It's the kind that rental places offer for rent.

Thanks for the support everyone. The hoist is made by Key Accessories. I sent them an e-mail with pics this morning. I talked to the Pepboys people and sent them an e-mail as well this morning. I will keep everyone informed.

Good. That is what I way going to see if you had done. I got luck enough th e have an old school hoist i got from a member that works excellent. I pulled my motor and tranny together no prob. My only complaint is the new 8 ton jack I bought for it slowly goes down after setting a few days with no load on it.

Wow this scares me, Ive had that same hoist for 2 years and lifted several smallblocks with trannies and no problem so far. Im thinking I may re-enforce it now to be safe though!

The smartest thing the manager could have done would be to give you your money back and get the hoist from you. Now you are angry and you have proof they are selling an inferior product. What an idiot...

I can tell you if I owned a business and sold a product like this that failed, I would sure as hell listen when someone brought one in that was damaged like that.
Next time there is a good chance they will be dealing with a damaged motor, damaged car, or even a person with some serious injuries. What ever possesses a business to brush you off like that is beyond me. They must have good insurance.

Are you saying that a pepboys manager is capable of doing something smart?

This shows why you should never place anything you can't afford to lose under anything that isn't solidly supported. It's also going to be a lesson for you on how to deal with the store manager. If you don't get a rapid solution, contact a local tv station. They love stories like this.

Too late, Pep Boys rep is allready shot. I have my hoist in storage now and will have to check out the design before it gets put back in service. I agree with the pic showing where the fulcrum point should be. Heck, I might just manufacture a whole new boom assembly.

well i went out and looked at mine very close design but my bottom bracket is bigger. and covers the exact area where yours bent and is lined up with the yellow line as before mentioned.
maybe it's all the stickers holding mine together?

Maybe the welder put that eye in the wrong spot. Can the other people with the same cherry picker check theirs?

If that was the case and you had a pic of a properly assembled one it might help your case.

Just include a little blurb in your communication with Pepboys about how your hand was smashed when the boom colapsed. I assure you they will contact you within seconds of receiving it.

here is what it should look like with a 1/8" wall tube. which in my opinion is still light. 3/16 would be nice but heavy to move around.

While being centered in the area that the upper strap is used to distribute the force over is one issue, the length of the area that the lower bracket distributes force over is also critical.

There will be a region along the length of the bearing arm where the tourqe created by the two forces (the weight of the load and the piston) converge. Maximum strength will be achieved by reducing the moment arms of these forces (keeping them close together) and increasing the width of the region where the force converges.
