Gear Ratio and AOD

I looked at an 85 Chevy 4x4, nice looking truck but it had a few issues.
One thing I questioned was gears, it has a overdrive automatic trans (700r4 I assume) and I asked the owner what gear ratio in the axles , he didnt know so I looked at the option list on the glove box door and it said it has 2.73 to 1.
This dosn't sound right 2.75 gears with a overdrive trans.

Re: Gear Ratio and AOD

Nope sounds about right. My 86 k10 had 3.08's stock and my 84 k5 4x4 has 2.73's. The k10 is federal emissions and the k5 is ca emissions with the tps carb, o2 sensor, map sensor and mixture control solenoid. 2.73 is a good highway gear but kind of a pig around town.

Re: Gear Ratio and AOD

I figured with an automatic overdrive trans that the gear ratio would be like 3.73's or 4.10's. 2.73's w/ an AOD seems like it would be an awful tall gear.
I don't know if this means anything but my 2006 Silverado 2500 has an AOD with 4.10 gears and crusing down the hiway at 70 mph its taching around 2300/2400 rpm.

Re: Gear Ratio and AOD

3.42s is as tall as I'd want with O/D,manual or automatic...in a 2wd with street tires. I can't imagine a dog with 2.73s, O/D, and 33" or more tires. Even if it could stay in O/D much it would probably suck more fuel than shorter gears...unless on flat ground doing 80+ mph. Isn't AOD Ford terminology?

Re: Gear Ratio and AOD

Yeah your right AOD is Ford but its faster than typing automatic overdrive transmission, guess I could have said 700r4. Oh well everyone seemed to know what I typing.

Yeah they did and so did I. Was just messing you and acting like a GM Truck guy would. I've seen worse, like guys calling my Blazer a Bronco. That's ok, everyone calls Ford Stylesides and Dodge Utilines Stepsides,so there!
