Sending Unit Gasket

Ok, I know I can get a new gasket from all the usual aftermarket suppliers. I even found the GM part number (1516395), and there's a bunch of them on Ebay.

But, mine is leaking now, and Frankentruck is my only vehicle with me in Milledgeville. I was hoping that maybe I could find something local tomorrow rather than having to wait on shipping. If I can't find something that might work locally, I'll be ordering a new one and just keeping a window open when I drive

Has anyone found a universal gasket that works for the stock sending unit?

Hmm, that just might work. I'll have to see if the bolt holes line up. Hopefully they do. Thanks!

Might be able to grab a piece of cork gasket material and make your own as well...

I didn't think of that, but yes, that's a good option as well, thanks

Re: Sending Unit Gasket

Welp, the float sunk again, so that changed my plans. I tried to fix it about a month ago by soldering it, but that didn't work for me. When I pulled the sending unit out of the tank and moved the arm, the gauge moved correctly. I could also hear gas sloshing around in the float

Since I had to order a new float, I decided to order a box of 5 seals from the ebay link in my earlier post. Both the float and gaskets should be here on Friday. I read some reviews on Summit racing about a plastic float that many people are using with old sending units. Several people mentioned using it successfully on 67-72 trucks, so I'm going to try it on my truck too. I'll report back on Friday if it fits or not, but I bet it will fit.

I will stop by napa once I have the correct seal to see if the bolt holes will line up to the one in the link The_Rocknrod provided in case anyone in the future runs into the same problem

They really do
It was funny when I put it back in after testing. A bunch of air came bubbling to the top of the tank

Re: Sending Unit Gasket

The big sad has happened.
My NOS gaskets are somewhere around Atlanta, but don't seem to be on the right track. They were supposed to show up yesterday, but they "left" the Atlanta distribution center at 3 different times throughout the day. Wound up in the Peachtree distribution center this afternoon, but haven't left there yet. We shall see when they actually decide to show up :wah:

The float did show up and looks about the correct shape. I won't know for sure until the gaskets show up cause the remainder of the gasket on the tank doesn't have another removal and reinstall left in it

Re: Sending Unit Gasket

Yay, NOS parts Was supposed to be 5 in there, so the Ebay seller is going to send me the missing one since I paid for 5. Hopefully going to have some time later this week to get the new float and gasket installed

Not sure yet. Probably won't be able to check with the Napa one until later this week

I got 5 NOS gaskets for a couple dollars more than the single at Napa, so I decided to just wait until the NOS ones showed up to compare with the Napa one in store. Of course, USPS tried to loose the package for a couple days, so that hampered my progress

Re: Sending Unit Gasket

Ok, so I thought my local napa had one in stock, but they didn't. I was able to place the NOS gasket up against a picture, and the bolt holes did line up.

If we can confirm that the stock gasket is considered an SAE 5 bolt pattern, then the Napa one would fit

Re: Sending Unit Gasket

I bought a linear float type sender from Summit that was a 5 bolt and it fit fine.

Re: Sending Unit Gasket

It probably is an SAE 5 bolt sending unit then.
Now I'm thinking my dad's boat has the same bolt pattern too. I'll have to take the gaskets home with me next time I go home and see if they match
