SMOG (aka A.I.R) pump rebuilders

Yes, that's right I am looking for a SMOG pump rebuilder. Most people toss SMOG pumps when they seize-up. This usually happens when check valves stuck open which allow exhaust gases to travel into the pump melting impellers.

How difficult it is to re-build these things, parts availability??? Too much PITA for DIY, specialty tools?

Why I am doing this - well since I live in eco-stupid state I have to keep this thing on (even though it does not do anything worth while).

It is exempt from bi-annual testing, but CA regs stipulate that all original SMOG equipment must be present and connected. I run EFI on my rig and SMOG pump is useless since ECM keeps fuel mixture near stoichiometric most of the time - not the same with a carb! The only reason why I want to keep SMOG (aka A.I.R.) pump is for visual compliance. My truck (medium duty) is over 6800 GVWR and was one of the last of production line to be certified for lead gas, no cats, no EGR configuration. Just the PVC, AIR and evap are required.
In LA county CARB have roadside checks for emission compliance - so one has to be very careful with these eco-idiots!

Re: SMOG (aka A.I.R) pump rebuilders

Sorry I ditched mine in North Carolina in '74, a year after I bought the truck. I figured it had no value, was a performance robber, and since I thought I'd never get back to Cal, I'd never need it.
How savvy are these guys? Would a York short compressor with a few Buck Rodgers FX doo-dads get over on them?

Re: SMOG (aka A.I.R) pump rebuilders

Use your imagination for a moment.........let's say, just for the sake of "exploring" different options......perhaps for testing purposes or off-road use.........if you already have a pump, how about a modification to one with no impeller inside? It would be "present and connected" still. Fine print: Of course after "exploring" these options for personal or off-road use, it would be your responsibility to replace it with a functional one for on-road use when such testing is completed, so I'm not implying anything...........

Re: SMOG (aka A.I.R) pump rebuilders

The SMOG (aka A.I.R.) consumes very little engine power, less than 1/10 HP. (BMW uses an electric motor to power its AIR pump). It is on the par with an idler pulley used in most serpentine belt setups. Most of the times the plastic impeller gets the hot treatment and melts down. Next thing prone to failure are bearings. Other then the darn thing looks ugly and additional hoses I have no heartburn about it being there.

Most of smog inspectors are not very sharp when it comes to 70's equipment - they do not see 60 & 70 rides very often. The smog referees are the experts and can not be fooled very easily - these guys are very knowledgeable.

Since I do not drive my rig into LA-LA county, my only concern are the spot road stops (smog traps) they occasionally have in So-Cal. So as long all the stuff is in, looks functional and connected they do not bother older rides too much. They are primarily after rice rocket crowd, expired registrations and red check engine light drivers.

Found a rebuild unit from A1 Cardone. The two pumps that I have have shot bearings - squeal like a pig in abattoir.
