Replacing windshield header

My windshield header is rusted all the way across the top. I'm getting a replacement windshield frame with the header in tact cut about 6-8 inches down the pillar on each side.

Curious how others have went about this?

Should I cut just the header out and weld the replacement header in?

Or

Cut my pillars 6-8 inches down and weld the new pillars onto mine? Leaving the weld of the replacement header and pillars in tact.

Re: Replacing windshield header

It was quite a few years ago now, but I rolled a '72 Jimmy which forced me to replace the the frame down quite a bit lower. It actually worked out pretty good. We put the glass in it when we fir it up so that we knew it would be spot on. You could to the same thing with the method you are purposing which may be easier because the glass would still be on the Blazer.

Re: Replacing windshield header

Before you cut the original one out, tack weld locating bars on the lower part of the windshield frame so that the donor header can be placed back in it's original location. A lot easier than to use than a measuring tape.

The locating bars is like a weld jig. Kinda difficult to explain without pictures, but basically you want to locate the the original header before you cut it off. This way the donor header will have a place to locate itself , and will be welded in it's perfect location.
