87 blazer tank into a 1st generation blazer - how many have done it?

The title basically says it all. Who has installed a 87 blazer tank into a 1st generator blazer?

What was needed as part of the swap? Fuel neck issues? Fitament issues?

thanks in advance!

Keegan

Re: 87 blazer tank into a 1st generation blazer - how many have done it?

I have a first gen with an aftermarket tank, and a LWB K-10 with a 2nd gen EFI blazer tank. From memory, its going to be a squeeze... On the LWB, I moved the crossmember back a bit, and built a new front crossmember for the tank straps. The K-10 has a 4" lift which also helped put some distance between the newer blazer tank and the rear diff.

I put a 31 gal tank in my 72 Blazer. I moved the stock rear crossmember back, for added diff clearance. I used a 73 up front crossmember. I installed the filler neck in the factory 72 location. All in all, pretty straightforward project.

Wasted - Where did your EFI tank from?

LMC is local to me so I ran down and got a 25 gallon 87 tank. Got it home and NO baffles!

Rock Auto. The one in the K-10 is a 31 gallon from a 1991 K/5.

Re: 87 blazer tank into a 1st generation blazer - how many have done it?

Went back down to LMC and looked at their 31 gallon. This one had a fuel bowl/baffle so I grabbed it and installed it tonight. I used the old rear crossmember from my other frame for the front bracket. Moved the original rear bracket back a bit. Snugged the straps and it fit like a glove. FYI - The new front (old rear) crossmember was notched at one time to fit the old 38 gallon Aero tank. That's why you can see the old notches if you look closely.

Edit: Oh and I used spacers on the front crossmember because the frame gap was wider. Plus fitting both crossmembers so tight together I was able to snug the tank up between them fairly tight. The flange of the tank sits about 1" lower from my frame and sits very even this way. Any higher and I would be worried about the body sitting on the fuel neck. We'll see when it comes that time I guess.

Re: 87 blazer tank into a 1st generation blazer - how many have done it?

Would you mind taking some pics with a tape measure on the frame? I'm interested in measurements from the end of the rear frame horn to each edge of the tank, and maybe a shot from above showing how much clearance there is between the front edge of the tank and the diff.

I'm interested in possibly swapping to this tank on my K/5 to replace the FuelCellGuy tank and big nasty external pump. I hate having to keep at least a 1/4 tank in it to keep the pump happy.

I forgot to do this over the weekend. I'll get you measurements tonight. From what I remember my rear cross member is about an 1" or so from getting too close to the rear body mount. I could have probably moved it back another 1/2" if I needed the space up front.

Just by eyeballing, if my truck was slammed like yours I don't think there would be any clearances issues with the rear diff. Tank looks like it sits back far enough. I'll get you some pics and measurements tonight.

Re: 87 blazer tank into a 1st generation blazer - how many have done it?

wasted -does this help? If not, shoot me a text (913)-991-8478. Last picture shows the duct tape hanging from the tank/diff clearance.
I would almost think if you moved the rear crossmember ever further back (on the other end of the body mount) that it would work and give you even more clearance on the diff/front side of the tank? Thinking out loud here.

Re: 87 blazer tank into a 1st generation blazer - how many have done it?

Keegan, thank a bunch! Time to start taking some measurements on mine to verify fitment...a 31 gallon tank would be a welcome addition on my rig....I feel like i have to stop for fuel ever day I drive it....I'm running E85, and can never keep my foot out of it. lol.

Re: 87 blazer tank into a 1st generation blazer - how many have done it?

Nice build, in the middle of doing a 87-91 tank in mine and trying to do it the same way you did. Any issues to date with the pumpkin contacting the tank? Using the holes that are already in my k5 frame just in front (1") of the rear body mount the same way you did. From mock up it seems to put the tank a little to close to the pumpkin from eyeing it. Still figuring it all out. I've got ~4" lift in the rear so that helps. Any clue how far the rear suspension will travel at full compression? The bump stop on mine doesn't appear to be stock but it seems far from the axel....I'll post pics. Plan to do an install thread too.

Re: 87 blazer tank into a 1st generation blazer - how many have done it?

I've never had an issue with the diff touching the tank. WastedIncome has a lowered one, not sure if he has done the swap yet. He would be the one to know how close the tank really is since he is dropped. If you are lifted 4" in the rear you should be good regardless.

I know this thread is old but not as old as my truck! HAHA! Any new updates? The two tanks look to have different fill pipe locations.
