Driveshaft Center Support Bearing

Is it possible to replace the center carrier bearing on a 2 piece driveshaft without a press? I don't have one and the nearest shop isn't very near.

Watched my dad replace one when I was about 10 years old. We didn't have a press and I don't remember if he heated it or beat it into submission.

I haven't pulled it because I don't have a plan yet.

Rent a puller from the auto parts store or go to HF https://www.harborfreight.com/bearin...6c35a5814f1809
Tap the new one on with a piece of pipe or use a drift. Heating the new bearing can make installation easier.

Being a back yard mechanic, not many tools on hand....I layed the bearing down on an anvil smashed the outer ring with a 5 lb hammer (do wear a face guard for this)! After that, I took a die grinder & cut most of the way through on the inner ring, then smacked it with a cold chisel/hammer. I would bet that your DAD beat it on with a chunk of pipe. That is the way I do it....understand that you can warm that bearing up, but I would not. That bearing is sealed with grease......too hot & it will fail, do to the seals. Just a backyard way....Longhorn

Thank you very much, Longhorn. The way you described it sounds EXACTLY how my dad would have done it and probably did. Too many years have passed and I don't remember all but I know a big hammer was involved and he was not happy.

Yes, I will bet that he had a few choice words....I know that I did But you know that what hits me the hardest, was an old man with few tools....still got the job done Longhorn

ive done it without a press just make you you mark teh shafts so that are clocked right when it goes back in

There may be one or two fingers that do not typically come with the new bearing. They are located on each side of the bearing.
If you want to save them you will have to pull, or press, the bearing.
The may be gone already?
I searched the assembly for Prop shaft and failed to find a break-down of the center bearing.

I just did this at home, it’s fairly simple. I was able to get mine off with a small 3 jaw puller, reinstalled with a 1.25” pipe. Just be careful when reinstalling and to support the opposite end of the drive shaft so you don’t damage the bores for the u joint caps
