More than luck, I hope your surgeon is skilled and educated on the latest techniques. It can make a huge difference in recovery time.

Re: Back Surgery in the Morning

I had a herniated disc surgery 2 weeks ago between L5 and S1. The herniation was pushing on the sciatic nerve. I had zero back pain, and uncontrollable pain in my left leg. They used iv steroids and iv pain meds, and oral muscle and nerve relaxers. Nothing worked. I ended up in the hospital for 6 days, and had surgery on the 5th day. The pain in my leg was immediately relieved, I just had a week of discomfort from the surgery itself. I have 4 more weeks of lifting 10 pounds or less. At 33, I have a lot of lifestyle changes I’ll have to make. I’m an auto tech and I own my own shop. I’ll have to get more creative and smart with how I work, because I never want to feel that pain ever again.

Is yours a disc surgery or fusion? The recovery is a lot quicker with disc surgery. Good luck and I hope everything goes smoothly.

Re: Back Surgery in the Morning

From what I hear, the hardest part of recovery is following the no lifting/break it in slowly order. Mind that back!

Re: Back Surgery in the Morning

Good to hear your surgery went as expected. I did the same thing 10 years ago. Don't be to confident in your stamina and strength at first. It is easy to over extend yourself in the first couple of weeks.

Keep walking short distances while slowly over the coming weeks taking longer and longer walks. My surgery was in January so the weather wasn't great for walking outside so I ended up driving to one of the local malls twice a day and doing laps around the inside.

I bought a pedometer to make sure I kept increasing the distances I walked and after I returned to work I used it to be sure I kept getting enough steps to keep my back healthy.

I still have occasional bouts of sciatica which I have noticed relate to periods of inactivity on my part. (Like getting Covid last winter.) And every time I have to lift something heavy I try to figure some way of doing it without bending over and lifting. Other than that I have had a successful recovery allowing me to still play competitively in soccer leagues.

Good luck with your recovery.

Glad to hear you are on the road to recovery....

3 1/2 years ago I had the same exact surgery for the same reason. I was walking with a walker by the time I went in for surgery. I am now back to doing everything I did before and more. I actually overdo quite often and sooner or later I will probably pay for it. The only problem after the surgery is numbness in my left foot, which I still have.

Re: Back Surgery in the Morning

Thanks All. Yes recovery is going to be the hardest part. I’ve always been a pretty active guy so 6 weeks is going to be a life time. I just keep telling myself it will all be worth it so just Do it dam it LOL. Today is good, pain isn’t bad but definitely there. If it doesn’t get any worse then this it will be a walk in the park
