Is it me or is my distributor super close to the firewall? And don't suppose the PO welding the mount to the frame is helping the situation any.

My distributor was about that close to my firewall as well. I ended up cutting the firewall and welding in a new piece, but that was just so i could pull it off easier if i had to. And i wasnt concerned about originality.
If you can get to what you need to in order to time it or remove it then i dont see why it would be an issue.

Common issue.
It's the large diameter of the HEI distributor.

Yes the large cap HEI's are a little close to the firewall with the engine in the original location. I've never had any problems with them like that. I've still been able to set the timing and remove the cap and the distributor.

Not sure about the distributor but it looks like you might want to do something with what I think is the battery cable. It looks like it has got a little hot from the way it looks discolored. I guess it could be a plug wire too. lol

Yea, that looks like the main battery cable going to the starter sitting right up against that header.

Yeah - it's the battery cable - hoping that when I put my porterbuilt front member in I can gain a little extra clearance from the firewall even if it's just an inch or so. Thanks for the insight... glad to hear it's not just my truck.

I stopped at advance auto and picked up a sleeve for my battery cable that ran sorta close to my headers too. It's an aluminum looking sleeve. Wasn't too expensive and I think it's made by DEI. It looks pretty cool and I'm sure it's good for 5HP LOL....

Thanks LDO - I'll definitely be looking to invest in one of those - replacing all the wiring during my rebuild - so another thing to add to my list. Appreciate the point in the right direction

I swaped out the 283 to 406 small block in My '62 used stock '72 smallblock mounts and have finger wiggle room so about an inch.

Also the battery cable should run down in front of the mount.
