So I have a couple silly questions...maybe one of yous can clarify things fer an old guy...
First..Was the white lower panel under the dash bezel correct...?
And were the hood hinges & springs galvanized/silver..?
And...my '63 has the manual throttle cable, and it is located directly on the right of the column, next to and level with the ignition key...spaced like the rest of the knobs. Is mine in the wrong spot...?
I will politely disagree with jb. All the hinges I've seen on Fremont built trucks are plated, not painted. Dull cad or maybe gray phosphate? This detail could be an assembly plant thing or a Chevy/GMC issue.?
The instrument panel, the panel under it, and the steering wheel are all off-white on "custom comfort" interiors in '62.
no input from me on the 4X4 choke/throttle knob locations.

Re: most original 60-66 truck in existence?

#1 No it is not correct.
#2 No they were semi-gloss or underhood black.
#3 NO the throttle is in the wrong spot on his dash, should be mounted in the panel like yours.

However, having said the above, I'd be damn proud to call that truck MINE.

Re: most original 60-66 truck in existence?

I have to agree wit the position of the throttle cable. Iv enever seen them mounted under the dash. Normally to the left of the ignition. The mount its on looks similiar to the 4 way hazards mount, but not quite. Ive only seen the cable pull vents mounted under the dash. But its a great looking truck either way. Thanks for shareing the pics.

Re: most original 60-66 truck in existence?

Thanks jaunz1947 for posting the great photos of the '62. It's always refreshing and inspiring to see one brought back to factory condition. Notice the period '62 sales brochure on dash for reference, no wonder it looks so correct. How many are restored with their period barden step bumpers painted correct silver-gray? THe owner resisted the temptation of overdoing the restoration with chrome that the vehicle originally never came with.

Re: most original 60-66 truck in existence?

Heres a few pictures from my 1962 C10 Shortbed with 14,000 miles. You can see the hood hinges were silver cadmium plated like the bolts under the hood. The hood springs were dark grey/black phosphate. The dash knobs on his truck I would say are all wrong in that they are actually for a Custom cab truck. "T" Throttles are on the RH side of the column. It does also show this as only 60-62 and a picture in the Chevrolet parts books.I think they look great but feel they originally were all black. Many of the "Dealer installed radios" came in kits and all seem to have the deluxe knobs, it may be such that he was just trying to be consistent/matching all the way across the dash ? Either way seeing this truck done right is nice to see. Not many people go to the lengths he did to make them look like they should.

Re: most original 60-66 truck in existence?

here are some very nice examples of mostly original '65 Chevy shortbeds...while it states the one in SC has been repainted once, i'm pretty sure the one in MS has definitely been painted as well...i just randomly came across these today...and what sparked my interest is the fact that I moved from Brandon, MS to SC last year....and Summerville, SC is just up the road from where i live now....that said, i'd be glad to look at the one in Summerville for anyone interested....and i have forum member friends in the Brandon area who i'm sure wouldn't mind checking out that one as well....just wanted to share:

http://www.cars.com/for-sale/vehicle...nal&listType=1

http://www.cars.com/go/search/detail...&&aff=national

dang, just noticed the one in SC says it has a replacement engine...but i wonder if that's a rebuild or what?

Re: most original 60-66 truck in existence?

Both of my "drivers" are pretty unmolested. Ones a 66 C10 with the factory 327 and the other is a 61 K10 both were bought from the original family owners and they both still had the original shocks. The 61 was only on its second set of tires in its life which were shot from sitting around, but theres not a thing added to it that wasnt from the factory. As for the 66, the only thing ive really done to it is rebuild the carb and wire it. They are good examples of how things were.

Re: most original 60-66 truck in existence?

Well, I have a 62 that was used as a plumbing truck. It has some plumbing modifications (racks and toolboxes) and hasn't been used in 20 years, but is still stock. It's going to be my project truck over the summer. I found it out back at my dads plumbing business underneath a pile of junk. I think I might start a build post for it.

Wow, how cool is that. Looks like you have some work ahead of you just extracting it from its resting place! The old wire wheel looks to have been there for quite a while as well.

Welcome to the forum! Look forward to your build thread.

Re: most original 60-66 truck in existence?

Though I would post some pictures of our 1966 GMC Fleetside. 18,000 original miles. Truck was bought new in Miami Oklahoma. Truck sat in a repair shop garage of the original owners off Route 66 in Baxter Springs Kansas all its life. Had a camper shell on the back for a short time. Options include 305V6 with powerglide trans, Dual GMC spotlights,Hazard Flasher,Power Steering, Power brakes, big back window, bumper guards, Custom Cab. Added was Frigitte AIR Under dash AIR. All the red paint you see is 99% original from 1966, truck had a step bumper I removed and put a factory chrome bumper on instead, had to do a small touch up on the bottom of each qtr panel from the step bumper. The white on top of the bed was touched up due to the camper shell.Interior all stock from 1966. Truck runs and drives like a new truck.

60-66 beautiful truck....I learned to drive in a truck exactly like that when I was a kid....my fathers truck was two tone red and white colors - top white and middle down was red but our truck had the small back window...cool...

So nice. How'd the engine compartment fair? It seems as far as the low milers go, the more prone the original owners were to cleaning the engine, the worse they did over time.
Let 'em be and give 'em to me, I say.

Thanks for posting photos 60-66! This truck is exactly what this thread is all about! Beautiful time capsule of a '66 GMC. IMO, this '66 GMC has joined ranks with oem4me '66 Chevy, as the most original trucks in existance. EXcellent reference for someone doing a factory restoration ( wish there were more done up stock this way). I brought up the differences in GMC's before, and your truck proves my point. It has the blacked out area between hood scoops ( near hood latch) to look like one large hood scoop. Also black fender tubs found on GMC's built in Pontiac Michigan. I assume the firewall is fawn on your truck also. One request, please show a close up shot of the "Custom" emblem. If I am correct it is not all chrome, it should have red and white paint stripes below the "Custom" logo. In a world were most everything is modified for one reason or another, it is a treat to see a GMC looking the way it did in 1966.(except for that photo with the car style full wheel covers of course)

Re: most original 60-66 truck in existence?

Thanks Factory stock. The firewall on this one is all red but I think some fawn color is peaking through. Yes the Custom emblems are Red and White striped. Its on a lift in storage so it will be awhile before I can snap more shots. I've had these emblems NOS before and your definitely correct on the red and white. Most I see are just white striped ?? I also had a low mile 63 Custom one Ton panel that still had its original red and white striped Emblems. The full wheelcover photo is the day I picked it up in Baxter Springs KS coming out of the old shop it was stored in, I agree those hubcaps were ugly.
