We finished the day by deciding on PCM placement

The first and second pics are Wyatt curving the patches for the radio knob holes.
The second two are Wyatt opening the hole up to properly fit the patches
And the fitment of the patches

The patch over the divet for the steering column
Everything ground down and ready for filler

The owner has already said he doesn’t want this. But I couldn’t resist, I bought it for me!

This is something we’re toying with, waiting on a decision from the owner

we fit and mounted the PCM. I didn’t like it on the passenger side because the vintage air needs to mount to far forward making the glovebox too shallow. We used carriage bolts though the firewall, squared the holes with a file, and reshaped the heads to be aesthetically pleasing.

the owner gave the go ahead on the eyebrows, so today we welded them in. Updates later.

We welded the eyebrows on today. The beadroll on the passenger one was off, so we flattened it and started over. We actually spent quite a bit of time just staring at it, making minuscule adjustments to make it perfect before we welded it.

Then we figured we’re better mock up the AC and do the welding before we do any filling! What you see is not your Vintage Air, it’s my mock up case (a case with no guts for making your brackets and making sure things fit)
Tomorrow we hope to get the column in and brake booster.
We’re hoping to get the interior in primer next week.

Started out by cutting that tab off the pedal assembly
Then we mocked up the column and fabbed up the brackets, tacking everything in
Tomorrow we’ll seam weld, then the column goes back in the box until after paint

Next we drilled and installed the brake booster

Today we seamed up the brackets for the column
Then we masked the column and painted them
We then cut the foam so the column fit back in the box with the new brackets
That’s where it will stay until after the interior is painted

Then we used the brake to bend up some of my custom 6x9 boxes
I think it looks pretty damned clean!

we also bent the brake pedal for column clearance
Where it’s at you can’t quite pivot your foot from gas to brake (almost, but not quite) it’s up to you whether or not you want us to try to add steel to lower it.

Then we put a first coat of filler on the dash
We’re using Rage Ultra, the most advanced filler on the market. Sands like butter!

did some work on the dash today. That’s the first coat of filler sanded down
and the second coat applied

Today we sanded the second coat of filler
And applied the 3rd (and I believe final coat)
We modified the master cylinder setup
Deleting the ABS
we also pulled the pins for the gas tank straps, and removed them

so we decided to fill the gas fill hole

Then we decided to tackle smoothing the firewall
After straightening some metal I think it came out pretty good!

The right side outer cowl is where we ran into issues. We cut out the vent and noticed a large vertical dent. We decided (because of the location) that it would be easier to cut it out, straighten it, and weld it back in. While welding it back in we noticed that our welds were awfully yellow. Wyatt said, "it’s almost like I’m welding on lead”. Can’t be GM only leaded the Body seam, which is near the top of the cowl

So Wyatt took the propane torch and melted lead out of the entire outer cowl revealing a huge vertical dent! I think what we’re looking at is 50's bodywork. Obviously the door hyperextended, putting a crease in the cowl. Lead was extensively used in bodywork until the early 60's. I have a video of us melting the lead, but I’m having trouble uploading it to Facebook.
