48 door window glass

My 48 has the metal trim that goes around the window. I can only find them at LMC and Brothers. Are there other sources? Are they necessary if I have to replace the window channel anyway?

Thanks.

Re: 48 door window glass

You have to buy a special narrow groove channel if you don't run the metal but those windows are pretty fragile without the metal rim. Rough handed Annie slams the door and you have a broken window glass.

Since I am stretching my doors a bunch I am going to have tempered glass made for my truck when I get that far.

Re: 48 door window glass

My buddy had new felt, and new glass in his 48 and the first night he got it out of the upholstery shop a gal slammed the door and broke the glass. His truck obviously didn't have a frame around it. I've never liked the looks of the frame but would be hesitant to run glass without the frames in a stock height window.. Throw in that my 4'10' wife is terrible about slamming car doors on anything she rides in. 52 years of my fussing hasn't fixed that.

Re: 48 door window glass

I personally don't care for the metal trim. I removed it from my last two builds. You just have to run a narrower channel. I have never experienced any cracked windows.

Thanks
Marc

Re: 48 door window glass

Marc, what channel did you use? What window? Oh, and did you use the glass channel that goes on the bottom just without the metal trim ring?

I used the channel from the 51-53 (I think) the vent window doors. I can get you a part number. ** THIS CHANNEL IS NARROWWER THAN THE METAL GUIDE IN THE DOOR. NO one makes window channel with the outer dimensions and inner dimensions needed (trust me) I just used a few small screws to secure it. Once all together with the trim and seals it works fine. I had my class custom cut. Just use a window with the trim on for an overall size/shape. Yes you use the normal bottom glass channel. I just cut away the metal surround.

Here is what I used.
