Plug old gas filler hole

on my 1958 Apache I moved my gas tank from behind the seat to underneath between the frame rails. What do u use or how do you plug the hole where the old fill tube was short of taking it to a body shop and having it filled in. If anybody needs a behind the seat tank, like new with ,float, filler tube 1 strap and strap covers let me know ....cheap/ you pay shipping from NV.

I used a piece of old fender that had approximately the same curve and welded it in. Little grinding and skim coat of filler and here is what it looks like. Trick is to do tiny spot welds opposite from each other to keep from warping the metal. I would do a few welds, let it cool do some more etc. Other guys have just kept the filler neck and grommet and secured the cap with epoxy to keep a gas jockey from accidently dumping gas into the compartment.

On my cab I fixed a CB antenna hole with a tin can lid epoxied on the inside and blended in with body filler on the outside. 2 years so far and no problemos. The next caretaker can weld up the hole if he wants....

I remember seeing a photo where someone did that just to get comments. Could leave the cap off, stick out a gremlin head, lots of possibilities. Kustombrad fit a piston into the grommet.

You could also cut the filler neck off so an inch or so of the filler neck will be left inside the grommet and put a soft plug in it or weld a round patch in it. Then with a new grommet and a nice looking cap you are good to go and no one will fill your cab with gas by mistake.

Most guys do as OrrieG suggested in post #2 or buy a plug that is already shaped to fit as Rich's55 suggested. Those are also available through several of the truck trinket vendors.

On my '64 someone had epoxied a plug in the plastic neck and mounted a power lock button to it then put a locking gas cap on it. An odd idea in that you had to unlock the gas cap to access the power lock button (you may as well just unlock the door) but kind of a neat idea. I was gratefull as one of the first things I did when I got the truck was replace the under box gas tank with a stock one behind the seat and I didn't have to deal a modified filler hole. The other thong I was grateful for was that they put the filler for the under box gas tank behind a tail light (fleetside) so, again, I didn't have to deal with fixing a somewhat permanent modification.

i welded mine in with a homemade patch; total cost about $.02

i should plasma cut 1000 of those and sell them for $9.99 w/ $5.65 shipping on ebay

but... if you don't have a welder or bodywork skills leave the filler neck and cap in place
definitely glue the cap on or plug the tube with something to keep anyone from ever gassing the old cap

I just figured if and when I move my tank to the back of the truck I'd leave the cap and the round fixture it fits into and the robber grommet where they are on the cab simply for the nostalgic look.

I already have a nice looking locking gas cap on there now, leaving the locking cap there would eliminate the problem of any body accidentally using the original opening and putting gas into the cab without a gas tank being there.

On plugging the pipe if you leave it. Someone I knew did get a cab full of gas when his daughter's boyfriend decided to be nice and fill his daily driver truck when the kids borrowed it and ran several gallons into the cab with no tank in there before noticing it. A locking cap or other fix is too easy to do to have something like that happen because you didn't.

Cab of gas would be bad. I know the locking gas cap works, I forgot to put the key "on" the ring and had to make a drive straight back home to get the key.

When I repaired the rotted out lower cab corners I discovered the cut off piece just fits this hole, so used it for a patch panel.

That was actually a late 60's daily driver/beater truck Dan. One of those you could probably leave the keys in at the cafe in town and never worry about anyone stealing it.

I need to fill the hole in my 71 as it has a 35 gallon stainless tank at the front of the bed but that is coming out and a tank is going under the back of the bed so I can run haul my camper. A 71 Chinook camper by the way.

You can use a structural auto body adhesive but you WILL have a "ghost line" that can be seen once it's all done. Will this be horrible, that's up to your expectations. It's not the end of the world, but if you can't live with seeing a line around the patch, you are going to need to weld it in.














Welding something like this up isn't a big deal. I did this with my oxy/acy welder firing it up for the first time in about 20 years.
