Re: 1969 C50 crew cab build

Found another mistake. If you ever build a frame for a C50. The drop amount from the top of the frame to where the front clip sits across the frame rails is 4.25". Not the 3" I somehow measured off the C50 when it was fully assembled. Other than that, everything on the frame seems to work well.

Re: 1969 C50 crew cab build

If anyone is interested in WAS running and driving C50 without the cab and front clip let me know. Everything is there except the cab, front clip, and radiator.

Re: 1969 C50 crew cab build

Here is the front end after cutting another 1.5" off the top to fix my mistake. I will make a 3/16" plate that I will weld inside the frame rail to beef it up. My jeep frame is the same height and thickness on the front and I have beat the tar out of it and never had an issue. The extra 400 lbs of the diesel won't be a problem for a road driven vehicle.

With any luck I will get the top plates made and welded on today.

Re: 1969 C50 crew cab build

Got it all sewed up tonight. Looks like where I was 2 weekends ago! Will try the front clip again tomorrow when I get some help from a buddy. The next step is to remake all of the rubber body mounts out of polyurethane.

Now to settle in and listen to the Mizzou vs Alabama game. Hopefully they can stay within 18 points and cover the spread!

Re: 1969 C50 crew cab build

Mizzou got spanked...
Got the front clip on and have the mount for the front grill all measured out and ready to mill. For the front cab mounts I used the factory C50 brackets. I bought a body mount kit for a C-10 from energy suspension (3.4108G) and the bushings marked "4010" are a perfect fit. The back cab mounts are 3.50" tall and will have to be made. Hold on to your shirt when you go to buy 3" diameter 85A polyurethane!!!! Expensive stuff.

Re: 1969 C50 crew cab build

why not do like the off road guys do and make a spacer block out of aluminum ? if you have the right size bushing minus its height .

lots of guys doing this for 1" -1.5" body lifts these days .

That's the plan anyway. I have no body work experience at all but I think I can get it figured out. Not sure how I am going to mate the cabs yet. After deer season I will start cutting the back of the 1st cab off and the front of the 2nd cab off. Then we will see what it is going to take.

Awesome!! I am in the no body work club too, but I have thought it over quite a bit, Especially since I have 4 cabs setting in my barn. I had to call a friend to talk me out of cutting 2 of them to pieces last week Haha

Re: 1969 C50 crew cab build

Lucky you! I wish I had 4 cabs to work with. I have looked long and hard for these 2 cabs. There is this guy in Hermann MO that I went to look at some parts at. He had at least 6 perfect cabs...and I mean perfect. He also had 3 primo Blazers. Dude wouldn't sell anything. I guess he just wanted to brag and tease me. I don't blame him, I am sure he has a lot of time in finding them. But why advertise and then not sell.

My wife doesn't share our enthusiasm, lol, and where I live it's hard to get a good one. I bought a k10, then another k10 frame with a rusty cab, then 2 c10s for parts, but decided the c10 was better to drive every day, then none were/are road worthy. So they are just waiting their turn, but I am slowly working on a c10 now. Project make it reliable is my build thread

Re: 1969 C50 crew cab build

Got the front firewall of the crew cab portion taken off this weekend. Looks as clean as I had hoped. Started disassembly of the front cab to get the back panel, headliner, etc out. The front driver bottom door pillar is pretty rusty in places. You can buy front pillar replacements for C10's but they are not the same as the C50. I will have to get into it deeper. I was reading a thread earlier and have bought a "67-72 chevy assembly line instruction manual" to help me understand where all the spot welds are. Yikes.

Re: 1969 C50 crew cab build

Some more info....a C50 cab sits off the frame about 2.5" higher than C10-C30 trucks. I will need to locate another set of C50 front cab mounts to get the 2nd cab on the same plane as the front cab. For the back mounts I will have to use the 2 most inboard set of cab mount holes that are already in the cab, and make another cross member and set of bushings like what I made for the front cab.

Anyone have a set of C50 front cab mounts handy??

He probably didn't want them to get cut up.

Mostly I was looking for non-rotted parts to salvage, and I got a couple of great deals along the way

Hey gup1972,

When your able, could you take a couple pictures of how your ch465 is mounted to the engine? Trying to confirm if there is adapter in between the engine and trans. Thanks!

Re: 1969 C50 crew cab build

This looks like a great build . Can I ask why you didn't want to use the original frame ? I would guess there plenty strong ? Keep up the great work . I'd love to build a reg cab truck like this with a big flat bed .

The original frame had several fire truck items that had been welded on and cut off over the years. It probably would have been fine but would have required a BUNCH of cleanup, etc. I really have no reason other than I wanted to I guess. In hindsight I would probably be much further along than where I am.

Re: 1969 C50 crew cab build

Question. I bought a 69 c50 and Im going to swap in my 79 K3500 DRW axles in. Any idea how close the spring perches are to a 3500 axles? I dont have my hands on the c50 yet.
