Re: Nudder Music Thread: 67-72 Music

Michael Nesmith of the Monkees passed away. He was my favorite of the group when I was a kid.

If you have, or have access to the Disney Channel there is a very good three-part documentary on the Beatles. My honey is not a fan of the Beatles, but she came away feeling a little differently about them after watching the doc.

Lastly if you haven't watched the Heart tribute to Led Zepplins Stairway to Heaven at the Kennedy Center youre missing an excellent performance. I wasn't a huge Zepplin fan back in the 70's, was sick of Stairway to Heaven, but I do appreciate them more in my old age lol.

Re: Nudder Music Thread: 67-72 Music

I've talked about my brother-in-law Paul playing guitar in a band called The Nighthawks before, and I've played a song or two on here. You may have heard of the band. Although local to the Washington, DC music scene, the band has existed for over 40 years and they travel heavy all over the country and Europe. They have backed up better known artists, had well known old bluesmen play with them, and even Greg Allman joined them for a spell.
Well, Paul was with them over 15 years before he decided to retire. They play a whole lot of shows each week, travel a whole lot (in a van mostly), and he and my sister live in the Shenandoah Valley quite a way from Wash, DC. Mark, the leader (harmonica) and original member, said the four Paul was part of was the best band of all. They are a fun band to hear and they play all sorts of venues large and small, and always give it their best. Mark still asks Paul to join in for special shows (dual guitars are great!) or when his replacement can't make a show. I may be bias, but I think they are great a versatile foursome for a band categorized as a blues/root rock & roll band.

Here is an 18 min bit from a show in a bar somewhere that I think shows a good variety. I hope you enjoy

Ok, that was a small show and here is one from Wolf Trap, which is a National Park, that shows more variety. You may recognize the song

Good stuff!

Here's one of my favorite Christmas songs by a rock musician. It's a real Christmas song that he wrote. Not a rock altered traditional song or a spoof. A true classic

I've always liked traditional Christmas songs with exception of a few, Lake's is one. Never heard that Foghat tune, great song.

Couple of odds and ends.

Re: Nudder Music Thread: 67-72 Music

Tragically Hip was rock that stood out to me in the '80s, and that led me to thinking about 3 Doors Down who created rock that stood out to me around the turn of the century. Both bands from not so typical locations. Tragically hip were from Canada (sorry don't know which province or city) and 3 Doors Down from Alabama. Both created their own sound, created a consistent long list of great original music, with exceptional writing of lyrics, and great lead singer.

I'll start these guys off with what may just be my favorite rock music video ever. Maybe 'some' can relate

My son was a 3 Door Down fan... For me, the song was "When I'm Gone". For many of us who deployed to Afghanistan or Iraq, it seemed almost like a theme song.

Re: Nudder Music Thread: 67-72 Music

The Hip were from Kingston, Ontario, where the penitentiary in "38 Years Old" is located.

To Canadians they were kind of like our Bruce Springsteen or our U2: except to the factor of ten. As a cultural or national symbol, that is.

When Gord Downie (the lead singer) was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer the band embarked on a national farewell tour that was capped by a live global broadcast by the CBC that was attended by the Prime Minister and virtually every culturally significant Canadian. There were something like six encores, all of which pre-empted scheduled programming (even hockey games!). Absolutely amazing band to see live.

They are not for everyone - otherwise they'd have been commercially successful in the US - but it is pretty nice to see people on this forum appreciated them, thanks Special K.

Re: Nudder Music Thread: 67-72 Music

Thank you, Dagnabbit for that great information. I'm very greatful to learn these things about the band. I had no idea why they did not continue. It's true they didn't have the commercial success they certainly deserved. That never mattered to me, and I've always kept my ears and mind open for good music through various sources to grab out what strikes my inner strings. Don't give a rat's arse about what's popular. Certainly means nothing about what is best. So sad to hear of this fellow's sad demise. Thanks again

How about some Enya Even better, if you like Celtic music at all I highly recommend "Celtic Circle", it's one of my favorite "albums". First has powerful bass, you can't hear it through here though, at least on on my computer.

Tim,
Thanks for those. I've not looked at this thread in a while but I am a big 3 Doors Down fan. Took my daughter to see them when she was 14, that was about five years ago.

Glad to bring them to you. They sure made a heap of good music. I have 2 CDs and like both front to back and never tire of their sound

I hope you were kidding. Alright? Considering she writes her own music, sings it so well, and is also a great pianist, I call her great She is from Maryland, too, so...

Then there were The Sundays from York, PA. Also near to me

I do know Inya. She's new age. And I also like Celtic music. Fairport Convention preceded the current Celtic music movement by decades. Sandy Deny was the singer and Richard Thompson was the guitar player. He made his own career, first with his wife Linda, then on his own. I think because he actually was on his own . You might have noticed I have a thing for singer/songwriters outside the commercial realm. I remember listening to them in my first '72 back in '73, on cassette. Really brings back memories. Especially Kim Finley, my biggest heart throb ever!

I don't know what led me to think of them, but today I came home wanting some Sea Level. Short lived band, great jazz/rock fusion. Chuck Level, the keyboard player from Allman Brothers and Johnny Jamu Johnson one of the drummers are a big part of the band, 1977. If you click on the title up top, it is the entire album

My dad was a band leader and that back in the day, big swing bands and strings too. Well when I knew him, he was twice my mom's age, he had a small, maybe 10-12 guys who would play here and there, but mostly at the Holiday Hotel in Reno, which is the name of the album these pieces come from.

This is the 60s right, mercy of less recording power, so my mom told me there were about 18-20 violins playing for his last two albums. Anyway, if you can suffer through the first melody you may find the next two pieces pleasant. They're short stints and run together. The guys would enter a large dining room and spread out over the room. They were champs and played together anyway, they did that 5 nights a week for many years. They wore tuxedos, dad in white the others in black or vise versa.

That's some fine melody. Takes me back to better times when people were happy just relaxing. Suffer through the first one? You should be more proud, I was able to suffer through them all < That means I'm totally kidding . Well Tony G, it's nice to meet you. My name is Tim Hicks. I'm at greater risk because I'll probably forget your last name in a minute

That Pink Floyd cover is a very good one. I like it better than the original w/o the heavy synthesized keyboards.

I remembered and went to listen to Mathew Sweet yesterday. Man, he made a lot of music back then ('90s)

Re: Nudder Music Thread: 67-72 Music

Thanks man, somehow I think we're brothers or something we like a lot of the same stuff. Truth be told while I'm a lot like my dad less he liked the attention. But especially the things I like and do have nothing in common with the rest of the family, full extension. They're just not a mechanical bunch, I like camping, same my kids of course, and doing my own stuff where I can. Nobody likes vintage beyond liking them, though I suppose one guy owned a special car, full extension, only because he could afford it.

Except my dad played the drums enough to keep him honest, he played some in that album, I never saw him play though. He had a set at home, but nobody played it, too noisy maybe They threw me on strings & piano, but I was a bum then too, only wanted to play what I wanted instead of practice. My older brother of course excelled, he was real good on the drums too. I'm better but he hasn't picked up an instrument in 40 years, the opposite me on the drums. I'm just the slow one

That album is maybe my favorite of four, couple pieces are my all-time favorites, but I'm bias as heck, I saw them perform so often. Back in his day he wrote a few singles and movie scores.

Here's the flipside of one single he wrote, he didn't write the "B" side. The A side was supposed to win, the producers threw the "B" side on last minute, some jockey flipped it over and next thing you know the "B" side is a hit. Personally I don't like the vocals on the "A" side, but the swing without it is real good. It wasn't his band.

While the B" side isn't one, he wrote a few tunes for the DeCastro Sisters, they often played at the same venues. For the most part he led house bands., so to speak, and the occasional need for shows with "ask holes like Frank Sinatra". Ha!......He liked most people, Frank wasn't one.

May as well show the A side too.

Another great from Canada, also gone from us, unfortunately
