Got a coil spring question for you guys

I got some coil spring spacers and when I went to put them on today I realized my springs didn't look right? I got the best pics I could, are these lowering springs or have they been heated up? Or did the 1/2 tons come stock with these?

Thanks

Re: Got a coil spring question for you guys

Not trying the argue, But I can honestly say that every 60-66 coil spring rear truck I can remember seeing, the springs have looked like that. Im pretty sure mine haven't been heated and they have the same set of coils that are close just like the OP's

Agreed.

They have been heated. Once an individual coil touchs an adjacent coil it no longer has any "spring rate".

I'd go ahead and try the spacers but I am betting it will ride very rough though. Once you put in the spacer you will only have 1 wrap of coil acting as the entire spring, all the other wraps of coils are already collapsed.

Re: Got a coil spring question for you guys

What exactly do you mean by spacers? The things that go in between the coils to give the springs some lift?

First off coil spacers suck .... In this situation, to get them to do anything, you'd have to squeese them in between the collasped coils. Good luck with that one. Disconnect shock, and lift truck by the frame.

Re: Got a coil spring question for you guys

Well im beginning to think ive been wrong about the springs, but it cant hurt to try the spacers. Worst case scenario, they dont do what you want, and maybe a new set of stock springs will get you where you want.

Re: Got a coil spring question for you guys

If you cant find some truck springs ... try some G-body ones.

Not sure what the height would be.

How would I lift it by the frame? I just thought the spacers would be best for me cause right now I'm still in high school and am low budget.

Re: Got a coil spring question for you guys

Hes saying to undo one side of your rear shocks to give you some spring travel and jack the truck up by the frame to stretch the springs out, and put the spacers in between two of the coils that are closed up

Re: Got a coil spring question for you guys

And you will never get a 2-1/2" spacer between the collapsed coils in the center. The only place the spacer will fit is either near the upper coils, or the lower coils.

And with only a couple coils really doing all the work the ride will be harsh.

How does the truck ride now, without the spacer?

Re: Got a coil spring question for you guys

He has the (variable)rate springs under his truck, they were used on the heavy half tons and the c-20's.they have the 3 coils almost touching each other in the center versus the (normal) or standard coils.the heavier coils are also thicker by quite a bit over the standard rate springs, and much heavier to lift.i tried a set like those and they sit the same but are much stiffer.i have 2 pairs if anyone needs them.

Re: Got a coil spring question for you guys

Those springs are "sprung" the coils are not designed to touch each other. If not a torch that truck was used for many years hauling something of significant weight to break em down like that. New ones are cheap, you need em for sure !

I would have to agree. My truck has springs like this and I have seen others. I find it hard to believe they were all heated up. I thought I was right on the variable rate thing.

I have cut the springs on 4 different trucks, and all the springs have looked like that. Definitely not heated but could be collapsed. These trucks are old.

Re: Got a coil spring question for you guys

Here are some pictures of the springs that miller has now there is a larger gap in these between the center coils but these of course are unladen being out of the truck.there was 1/8" or just a hair more of clearance between the center coils when they were mounted.check out the thickness of the coils.

yes your right, 20-30 years ago you would see these quite a bit when 3/4 tons were seen daily.miller92's springs have sagged and compressed over the years.when i bought my 62 they had standard 1/2 t springs that someone did a piss poor job of heating and lowering so i put a pair of the heavy duty springs under it and it was a little to stiff for me anymore so i opted for a (light duty) standard set.i just figured i would keep these around in case i change my mind.

Re: Got a coil spring question for you guys

Thanks for all the info guys, yall have been a big help!
I'm currently trying to find some springs that went under the 2wd 3/4 ton pickups and hopefully that'll raise it a bit. I knew the truck looked lower than normal but never did check it out. Now I know why. The front is a lil lower than I like but I can't change them myself so those will have to wait a while. Only 3/4 ton springs I've found so far are in LMC for $70. Didn't seem too bad to me but imma try to find some for cheaper first. You guys know what year springs will work for these pickups?
