Re: Installing The NV4500 5 Speed Overdrive Transmission In The C-30

Awesome read, I plan on doing this swap in a similar fashion.

My question is is there enough to room between the case side and the hole location to possibly use a 12pt or socket head caps crew on the top holes threading into the bell?

Pics of that area would be awesome

It has been long enough that I can't remember for sure, but I don't think so, or I would probably have done it that way. I will have to double check on that tomorrow.

Would this conversion be right for a 72 C10 that has a factory 3 speed with a low center hump? Thanks

I'm not sure what the bearing retainer hole size is in the bell housing for the three speed. (of all the '67-'72 trucks I have owned I have never had one with a three speed) If it is the 5-1/8th inch hole it will work just like mine did. The low center hump will not work. You would have to trim out the low and bolt in a high hump. Not really a big deal.

Thanks for the reply, 3 speed works fine but column shifter is not dependable and gearing is a little low for the highway. Love the down to earth info you offer . Thanks again

Well, just scored the correct bell for this conversion/work. By the way did you get time to go snap any pics of the back side of the ear?

If you are referring to running a bolt in from the case side of the transmission (the upper bolts) then I'm pretty sure there isn't enough clearance for the bolt head. In this picture, you'll see that I didn't drill all the way through on the final size because the side of the drill bit would have cut into the side of the trans case. I knew this because I drilled through with the smaller pilot bit and left the bit through the hole, then measured the clearance to the case.

Notice in the picture, only the small center hole goes all the way through...

I didn't take any pictures but there is not enough clearance on the trans case to put a bolt through.

Re: Installing The NV4500 5 Speed Overdrive Transmission In The C-30

Going to do this NV4500 install using stock bell housing, as outlined in this thread. This is a very helpful discussion. Below are starting photos. This application is 1966 GMC Suburban 4WD, divorced 221 TC. Bell housing is newer version. First photo is from thread. Circled holes are of interest as to how deep they can be. General rule on thread strength is, if they can be threaded as deep as diameter, then they will hold. In this case 1/2 bolt, with 1/2 thread depth will hold bolt strength. Also, will likely face top two holes in bell housing.
Again, thanks to Leon for sharing this information.

No problem on posting the thread.

I'm not 100% sure but I think I drilled those top holes deep enough that they were all the way through the mounting ears of the transmission and starting to break through the back side. I didn't want to drill them deep enough that the drill would start pulling to the side and egg the hole out. The threads were pretty much the full thickness of the transmission ear.

Re: Installing The NV4500 5 Speed Overdrive Transmission In The C-30

Just curious, would a gear vendors do the same thing but with less work? It would cost more I think but for the less skilled knuckle busters it might be an option? I was thinking about it for a 1970 K10 with a SM465 and my 1984 K30/SM465.

BTW, I have a 2003 Ram 2500/5.9 with the NV5600 and love it.

I am not at all familiar with the Gear Vendors overdrive. There is a ton of threads on that subject on the board so I would rather not get into that discussion in this thread, and keep it focused on the NV4500, thanks.

Yes, when I did this I used grade 8 flanged bolts and did face the bolt surfaces at the top two holes.

Good deal Les! My transmission is still working flawlesly and I use the truck a lot. I need to change the throw out bearing because it is making noise, but other than that, no problems.

Hard to believe it has been 7 years since I did mine....

Great write-up. I've been looking for info about this swap not knowing it was here on this site.

Gonna be doing this to my '67 c20 with a 327. It will replace the old SM 420 that is currently in it.

Good deal!

You should be able to use all of your stock parts except maybe your bell housing. Your bell housing would be the same as the one I used except that the front bearing retainer hole is the small (4-11/16") diameter instead of the 5-1/8" needed for the NV4500 transmission. You can either have yours bored out to 5-1/8" or find a bell housing from a truck with the SM465 manual transmission. (1968 up)

Let us know how it goes.... Or post a link here if you start a thread on your swap.
