Speakers

Just bought a 1994 chevy 1500 4x4, 3 out of 4 speakers are shot. What size are they, I'm going with after market and I'll replace front dash speakers and the rear also, so if someone can give me a size I'll find a set on Ebay, don't need nothing fancy.

Re: Speakers

My 93 has 4x6s. Think I went with round speakers in front on 4x6 chassis.

Re: Speakers

Mine and Ed's experience are the front ones tend to last sbout 2 years. I guess from sitting in our sun so much. But yeah, I think 4x6 the size

Re: Speakers

I think they went to 6.5" round in '95. That's what I remember buying.

Only my back speakers work at first. If I drive long enough the front right comes on. I've had the front left start working on a longer drive. The other day one of the fronts started working after hitting a bad bump. It never seemed shock related before, more like temperature.

Re: Speakers

Correction, mine is supposed to have 4x6s front and back. I changed the rears a while back, but these have been in the front since I got it. I got a pair of covers but never got new speakers for the front yet.

Re: Speakers

All mine work in the 91 but I can't help but think the stock radio would sound much better with some new if not better speakers without spending $200.
I don't care for amps and subs and all that jazz though.

The only thing that makes a stock radio sound better is turning it off.

Re: Speakers

Yeah, it sure doesn't compare with my Delco/Bose fac tree radio in the 06 GMC! But after exhaustive searching I've quit looking for a replacement for the stock 91 radio.

Re: Speakers

I'm guessing your radio is above the climate control? I have the cubby and the radio is where the tape player goes. Any double DIN will work, you just need the install kit.

Re: Speakers

I thought the radio in my '92 sounded great. It was the top of the line for '92. The stock radio in the '95 sounds pretty darn good once the front speakers come on. I have the AM/FM/CD/CASS OEM radio to pop in there. Then I'll see how the speakers sound. I'm figuring the off & on front speaker problem is in the unit not the speakers

Re: Speakers

Yes my 91 radio is the stock one above heater controls with cassette and equalizer in the center under the vents. I know about the install kit needed to install an aftermarket radio in the center location. I just haven't found a replacement radio I'd want.

Re: Speakers

Those stereos with the equalizer are the coolest. I like all the control displays in that dash.

I like that the fac tree controls are within easy reach of the driver. I had an aftermarket stereo in my old 88 GMC under the center vents and it just wasn't close enough and difficult to read the display while driving. I don't want that setup in this 91. I'm now thinking of just upgrading my speakers to get a little better sound out of this one. They are 31 years old.

From what I've heard, you might want to read up on how to remove the back panel where those speakers are. I've heard that it can be tough too do right and get reinstalled well. I haven't done it myself.

Re: Speakers

Well I did pop for that Retro Sound Santa Cruz radio after all since my OG radio crapped out in the '91. It's the only one I found that fits in the OE spot. Perfect.
I definitely need new speakers now. One of the back ones is all but dead now. After all they are 31 yrs old.
Since I bought this radio from Crutchfield, I guess I'll buy the correct 4x6 speakers from them also to match this radio.

Re: Speakers

For any speaker used you want to make sure that the mounting surface has no holes. If you do not the lower frequency's will be cancelled out. That is mid-bass and the limited bass that the speaker is capable of. The dash speakers still have a rear path under the dash. But anything you can do seal will make them sound better.
