Door weatherstrip

I ordered a new set of weatherstripping for the doors. Is there anything I should know or is it straight forward ?

just one thing - make sure you have it installed correctly - facing the right direction !

is it the glue on type or does it have the push on pins?

pretty sure my old weatherstripping is also on backwards. some of the plastic pins are broken and im getting water in the cab when it rains

The stock original weather strips retainer pins were made of metal. The after market ones are plastic pin and have a tendency to break. I would suggest once you find the correct install position use 3m weather strip adhesive along with the plastic pins.

I'm just about to do this to my truck. So, where do you lay the adhesive? Also, looking at the Brother's link, I don't have the two little metal clips. Is that going to be an issue?

this isnt the seals im replacing. i got the big ones that go around the outer edge of the door. heres some pics of the existing weatherstrips. theyre glued down in some spots. other spots are loose where a plastic pin is broken. im getting water in the truck mostly on the drivers side.
let me know, are these installed the right way or backwards?

do i need to replace these strips, or just glue down the spots that came loose with the 3m stuff?

Your weather strip is backwards, probably the most common mistake made with old trucks. Not just Chevys, I did it with my last truck which was a Dodge. It should look like this when installed correctly. I didn't glue mine on, just let the pins hold it but I did use hot glue at a couple of places where it didn't stay exactly in place.

That was the original intent, but it doesn't always work that way, LOL.

I don't have pictures but I just installed mine. I used a brand called Soffseal, what I liked is they are one continuous piece, no split at the bottom. The two lower corner edges are nicely blended in also.

Now that I see some of the pictures I've learned that I don't have the small clips that hold the weather stripping where it follows the contour on the door near the door handle. ( I wondered what those little screw holes were for.)

That area, front and rear of the door, I did apply some of the black 3M adhesive that Rude Dude mentioned. Always clean the rubber with a cleaning solvent first then apply the adhesive. The rubber can have a film left over from the manufacturer that doesn't allow the adhesive to stick properly. I then used tape to hold the weather stripping firmly where I wanted it to be.

I usually use the blue masking tape that has the least stickiness to it, I get mine at Wal-mart, I always fear using regular masking tape might try to peal away some weather stripping when I remove the tape.

I installed the new weatherstrips today the correct way. Wow I can already tell it fits better this way. Can't see daylight thought the door gaps any more.

Did you end up using some kind of adhesive in addition to the plastic pins?

Did you install the metal bar "retainers" on the bottoms of the doors that keep the weatherstrip from coming off over time?

hey Dan,
yes, the directions recommend 3M black weatherstrip adhesive. one big tube is enough to do both doors. i think its a 4 or 5 oz tube. i wouldnt recommend using the 1 oz tubes because it does not come with a pointy applicator tip like the bigger tube does.

my doors have 2 or 3 metal retainers near the latch area. you dont have to loosen the screws to remove or install the new weather strip.

i could never get my doors to close the right way with the backwards weatherstrips...now the doors close nice and tight!

its not easy to tell which way to install the weatherstrip. i found that its easier to tell if its facing the right way along the top of the door, and once you make sure you have the correct one for that door and its facing the right way, start in the bottom corner and work your way up one pin at a time

that's pretty much the truth there russell

like a dummy i installed mine backwards and had to turn it around
if you don't have the little clips or in loose areas just use a dab of the 3m weatherstrip adhesive
i used a bit of glue on the concave sections by the door handle and on the areas it was loose or sagging
no need to do the whole strip, i put a dab on a paint stick stuck it in the area to be glued
smeared it around a bit and held finger clamp pressure for a few min and reapplied pressure occasionally


i prefer the yellow 3m glue... go figure
