Advice on 1978 suburban limited slip differential in 1970 c10 - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I would like posi/ limited slip rear end in my 70 c10. Currently have a 12 bolt w 3.08 gearing with 350/350turbo with leafs setup. I found a 1978 suburban rear end that is 12 bolt limited slip. So questions or advice 1. Will it fit without too much work ie driveline/ width etc. What to look for to make sure it's not worn out and need a rebuild. Thanks.

I know the leaf springs brackets/saddles are in different positions. You'll have to cut and move thm inboard a bit on the newer axle. They should be same width as 70 was th change year. Even if you had leftover with the slightly narrower rear, the new one will work. The new one probably also has the bigger/HD (wider shoe), meaning more breaking power. Other than the saddles everything else should be fine.

Thanks for the info. I'm gonna try to contact the seller today and see if he knows the gearing. With my 350 tranny I have read dont want gearing much over 3.42?

I guess the other question could have been - would you guys just buy something like a Yukon limited slip kit with gearing like 3.42 and pay someone for the work or DIY?

With a non overdrive transmission, I would stick with a 3.08 or 2.76 unless you are towing a lot. Not sure which way I woulkd go with ur question. For rear end stuff, if I need to go inide it, I normally take it to a local shop to get it setup right.

I wouldget a corporate 14bolt you can find them with I think most of them are 8 but there are some 6 lug.Maybe you could convert them to 5 lug
