70s trim on 87?

I wanted to stop by and ask if anyone has a pic with the 70's side trim on an 80's model truck. I really like it and I like the accompanying paint scheme. In the 80's they switched to a different door ding guard along the sides, where it's thicker but it didn't have the upper part. That changed the way they painted them in most cases.

So hopefully someone here has a pic or two for me! Thanks!

Re: 70s trim on 87?

I don't have any pics and have never tried it, but I have a feeling you might run into some issues with the front fender trim.

The upper body line on the 73-80 front fenders curves down around the front, and the trim follows it, wrapping around the side marker light. While the upper body line on the 81+ front fenders just continues straight ahead and tapers off right up near the front. And the location / orientation of the 81+ side marker looks like it would interfere with the 73-80 style trim.

I would think about painting it on. I have seen a couple trucks done like that and you almost don't notice until you get close to it.

Re: 70s trim on 87?

If you do this, don't buy the entire 73 trim package. Skip the front fender trim piece, and use an additional bedside trim piece instead. This will follow the bodylines of the 87 a lot better.

One of the bigger questions, is what you're going to do at the front of the secondary color section, where it meets the grille. There were some differences in the way the 80's trucks handled this section. Some of them ran the color the entire way into the grille, and some had a simple paint transition about an inch back from the grille.

Thanks to all for the replies. I'd like to hear your opinions on how it would actually look. Do you think I'd be better off converting to the 70's front end?

Nice! I wonder if those are painted on, or if it's real trim. Hard to tell from the pic, but at least it gives me some idea.

That's the link to watch the commercial. I think it's real trim but someone heavily modified the front fenders to make it work.

Yeah a hollywood hangar truck they rented for the commercial. Seems they'll do some odd mods on a whim sometimes.
